Hi I am a guitar player that is kind of new to bass. I noticed that my Roadworn jazz neck seems to be lower on the treble side by about 1/16 inch when you lay the bass on a table and measure up from the table to the nut. Is that a twist in the neck or is it normal? I noticed later that my roadwork precision does the same so maybe it's normal?

It sounds like you may be seeing the radius of the neck. I'm probably going to get a jazz. The Mexican Standard is right at my limit for cash.

Okay so now I have to go to the man cave and check out my RW Pbass? Thanks man

If a neck WAS twisted so that the one side was 1/16 off from the other I would think you could look at the bridge saddles and see if they are out of whack -- 1/16 at one end of the neck would transfer over to more at the other end I would say--

There would be buzzing etc . The one guy may be right in that you are seeing the neck radius.

If I'm remembering right the g side CAN be lower because the diameter of the string is smaller than the others.

Not to step on toes I will say this Mexican Fenders are famous for neck issues,I dont think one side of the neck should be bowed more or less than the other side is,if its enuff of a difference that its a measurable amount then that is'nt normal which is why Fender uses graphite support rods and the Bi-flux trus rod to avoid these things.
I would go with a lighter gauge of strings=>40,60,80,100 set will work wonders,I NEVER on a jazz bass prefer to go higher than that, older jazzbasses can handle 105's on the E string but something less than 10yrs old: stay with 40-100 med Lt's gauge
Precisions basses usually can handle a heavier gauge because of its thicker neck but even the newer ones are not made with the big baseball bats like before, and the type of string is a big factor too,FLATWOUNDS are famous for being a high tension string which is why I do not EVER recommend using them on a J.bass and NEVER ever put them on my J.bass EVER,there are some low tension flats out there but to spend 50.00$ on a set of flats for a jazzbass is'nt my thing they belong on a p-bass
I would try the lower gauge strings and see how the bass plays, did you ever have the bass setup yet?do you know how to set your bass up ? sometimes I forget that not everyone does and I rattle off solutions or idea's ment for a old pro,let us know if it helps with the string change we'll go from there and also my Jazzbass also plays worse when I use a higher gauge string, funny its the same gauge they send them out with that makes my bass play crappy.
I try to pound it into everyones head,LEARN TO WORK ON YOU BASS,its one of the most important lessons to learn,it will save you money and alot of headaches there's books on it and internet sites dedicated to it,LEARN IT! Please :D
G/LUCK

A pic would be good. I have a nut that is higher on the E side than on the g side-- the slot is deeper on the e side of the nut -- no problem at all-- just whoever made and cut the nut did it that way-- but to see a pick of your bass would be very good.

It is hard to tell with those pics what's up-- in some it looks twisted-- take it to a repair guy or to where you bought it-- hopefully they will be honest in assesing the condition of the bass.
