I have a new FSR jazz bass and though I'm loving the tone my bridge pickup is annoying me with those raised poles under the A & D strings. Any solutions other than replacing the bridge pickup. PS i'm too old to change technique.

Those tall poles were chopping up my fingers untill I took the pickup out of the body and removed the cover--- I then installed 2 thin plastic strips cut the same length as the pickup and about 1/16 wide-- I installed them on either side of the poles on the flatwork of the bobbin. I made sure they were thick enough to boost the heigth of the cover to where the poles were just barely out of the holes in the cover and I made sure the shortest pole was at least even/flush with the hole. I put the pickup back in the bass and no more sore fingers. Do not try to file the poles.

I hope that helps--- you don't need new pickups to solve the problem--- unless it's something other than chopped up fingers you're having a problem with.

You can expeiriment with trying to lower the pickup or you can buy a pickup cover that does NOT have the holes cut out and replace the original ones w/holes.
You can also just put a piece or two of black electrical tape over the pole pieces to stop you from getting your fingers jammed up,this is an age old technique used for stopping un-wanted noise when the fingers brushed against the exposed pole pieces, give it a shot its the easiest and the cheapest of the bunch

That is an excellent solution Mr. Bram Stoker's Vance. Do NOT file is definitely good advice. Do not try to push them down or tap them down with a hammer either. I've seen two J-Bass pickups broken like that. Filing leads to two problems I can think of, neither good.

Hitting Alnico magnets with a hammer will cause them to loose some or all of their magnetism also.

Whomever advised hitting them with a hammer or grinding down the poles needs to have their head hit with a hammer, who would recommend that? even worse who would follow that advice and do it ?
WOW I firmly believe I have heard it all now, please note that not all the advice given here is'nt always Good and it is'nt always bad either,so before you take advice from someone here look into their other postings to see if they are legit, not everone here has good intentions and like causing trouble

To clear things up I did'nt mean that S.Vance intentionally gave him bad advice,What I really meant was there's alot of newer members throwing lame advice and too be sure to double check someones credentials before undertaking a home repair, not everyones intentions are genuine and to cover your $@! is what I meant and am sorry if I made someone feel it was directed at them.
I do appologize.

If you read the posts -- no one on this thread advised any such thing. Don't get mad at me, just the facts.
