I've recently came into possession of a Fender Jazz Bass, but am having a very difficult time trying to identify what type/style it is exactly. The serial number implies it was made in Mexico during 2003, I believe. There is a small "special edition" sticker located up near the tuning keys. Through my sleuthing online I have yet to find any information to help me crack my mystery, and I'm starting to think I bought a fake piece.

Any info on this bass, or direction to somewhere online that might would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

Aside from the terrible pics(important to show US the stickers, serial numbers)without it all we have is your description(which really dont say much)LOL! Just Joking :o BUT to me it looks like a special build Mexican Jazz bass, which means the store it was purchased from received a special edition limited amt.of this bass that only that named store(all their stores if more)has them to sell,no other store will have them(unless used),its also done with guitars.
What makes these special edition models special is usually its finish or wood used(or both),Guitar center had a Mexican jazzbass made from ash w/clear coat finish(Reg. Mex jazzbasses are alder now,& no longer basswood).
Your bass has either a photo finish or a figured maple cap over the basswood body,a photo flame is a image of highly figured wood printed on a thick wallpaper like material that is glued in place carefully on the front side of the bass then sealed and clear-coated,now its a much nicer expensive looking jazzbass at the cost of a Mex standard.
Or it can be a thin piece of figured wood(real, not a pic) glued on the top of the cheaper basswood and now you have a flamed maple capped bass for far less than a real one would be,I cant tell by the pic but Its definetily one of the two possibilities mentioned.

Thank you very much for the information. I don't play bass, so my knowledge is very limited on the subject. That was far more enlightening then anything I had found online so far. I do have a question. Of the two you talked about, photo finish or figured maple cap, which one would be considered "better", or are they equal? Is there any way I could distinguish a difference?

Alright, one last question. At $400, did I overpay?
Again, thank you for the help!

I don't think so especially if you got a case. It is a special limited type thing from Mexico-- not your run of the mill Mex bass I would say. Did you pay tax?
How does it sound?

Hey Memphis! Why do you always complain about the photos.... That's best foot photo I've ever seen on this forum.

 Sorry,I do stand corrected It IS the best Foot Photo,or Photo of a Foot ? Either one is Best :? or worst :| .
And YES figured wood cap on a basswood body far out-weighs a basswood body with a picture of figured wood imposed on a kind of wallpaper then glued to the body and coated over with laquer.
So the woodcap is def the best of the two possibilities but as far as appearence they are pretty close. GOODLUCK
