I saw a vintage modified Squier Fretless J-Bass in Sam Ash the other day. I gotta say, Squier did a quality job with this bass. The neck is smooth, and it's just a very easy playing bass guitar. And with a $299 price tag, it's definitely a good deal. Kudos to Squier for this bass.

No kidding huh...The Vintage Modified Squires are great basses. I like them a lot. Worth all the pennies they're charging.

I recently bought one of these, but I have a problem. If I play slightly flat the strings buzz as if I have worn frets! If I run my finger down the board I can feel quite clearly where every fretline is. Do I have a defective instrument or are they all like that?

I played one in the store, along with a mexi made standard fender fretless. I would say spend the extra cash and get the mexi fretless. Personally I didn't like the way the ebonal fingerboard felt or sounded. Didn't have the woody sound that the standrd fretless has.

I not a fretless player by any means...so the Squire Fretless Jazz is perfect for me. I can't see myself spending any more money on a fretless bass....I love my Sqiure! :P

I have played 3 different ones and I did not like any of them one bit. The fingerboard is made out of the same material as bowling balls and to me it felt horrible, it does not even fulfil it's purpose to reduce wear from roundwound strings. All three were set up horribly and even through a decent amp I could not find a tone that really took my fancy.

The other Squier VM basses I thought were fantastic, this one however was a bit of a disappointment in my opinion.

I know this is an old thread (!) but I picked up one of these on a whim at a very reasonable price used and Googled to see if anyone else had this issue. Absolutely you can feel the frets when you run your finger on the fingerboard. And when I spotted one in a store I paused to check it out and it was the same.

I only got it because I was looking for a cheap fretless Jazz neck, and it was as cheap as most any decent neck alone with hardware. I figured I could always put it back out there.

Anyone know of the best way to take care of this?

Thanks

But it seems as if they didn't use necks meant to be fretless on them, that they decided to take a pile of fretted necks and buzz them down smooth and coat them, as opposed to taking the frets out and filling them. It's no wonder they were going so cheap even at retail. Seems like they left the factory wrong.

Quite frankly, I've heard nothing but a lot of praise for this particular instrument, It sounds to me those of you having problems need to realize a good setup will solve most of the problems you've mentioned. That's seems pretty much what I've read, people intially had some issues, but once the bass was properly setup, they absolutely love them.

I only know the MIM Fender I had was very good. I'm not up on Squier, got to be a reason why it's about half the price as the fretless Fender Standard.

Not from any issues of overall quality from all I've read. I've even seen a good number of people saying they thought the quality of the Squier fretless surpasses the typical MIM Fender. I can tell you even though, I've never played the VM fretless, the quality of my two Vintage Modifieds, the natural finished Jazz and amber P is at least on a par with Fender Standards.

The Squier VM fretless is a good bass. I own one, have gigged it a handful of times when I needed a fretless (usually I play fretted basses). Fit and finish, I agree, seems generally on par with MIM Fenders. It's a good choice for the occasional fretless player.

Labor is cheaper in China and Indonesia than in Mexico.
