An instrument is for playing, if it's not in a playable condition because it needs refretting, get it done!

As for value personally I wouldn't give a crap, but I know a lot of people do. The way I see it, however, is that to me the instrument is worth less because it is not in a playable state. I regularly see refretted/refinished/butchered/fake vintage basses go for stupid amounts on the 'bay so I doubt you'll loose much value from a simple and necessary refret.

So long as you get a good luthier to do the job you'll be fine. Most decent guitar shops should do refrets , but it might be worth seeing if you can inspect some of their previous work if you're paranoid :P

Other than that I guess making sure it's refretted like for like, using the same type of fret wire will help keep the bass true to it's original state.

Sorry if my answer isn't very conventional but just my views :)

True!! I've said it here before too, I don't care what the value of an old bass is, it's only valuable if it's playable and only cost expensive to the person that think it's worth the price your asking for. . If you bought it for value in the future, should've bought a bass that is in perfect condition. Get it refretted by a luthier, or most music shops should be able to refret a bass.

I'll be having my 66 refretted this year as well. It's value to me is having it playable, not selling it for a "profit".

It has too much sentimental value to sell it anyway.
