By all means - upgrade. Just IMHO :) More flexability in position fingerings. Those B strings can be so full of emotion in the lower notes when appropriately played.

The Fender American Standard Jazz Bass produces an exceptional sounding 5 string bass. If it is comfortable, go for it! You love having the option to enter the sub-contra range :!:

Going from 4 to 5 string is not an "upgrade". It's a matter of flexibility and having what you need in order to play the songs that you are playing. If you don't need a 5 string don't buy one. It can take a while to learn 5 string if you are used to playing 4. Tom Hamilton once said that it took him almost one year to feel comfortable playing a 5. He still mainly plays a 4 string. I swicthed to a 5 string because the band I am in is all original and everything is drop D tuning. Check us out at myspace.com/grafite

We are getting a lot of airplay in New England and on some of the internet based radio shows. We will be featured on Maximum Threshold internet radio this Saturday. www.maximumthreshold.net

The five string has much more versitility for sure. I've noticed a few of the newer bands have bass players that use them. It can be quite frustrating to try and learn a song using your 4 string and having to drop D tune it.

hey i have no problem with tuning my 4-string deluxe jazz to d. it takes me a quick flick of the peg and i double check it with the 5th fret test and im good. don't get me wrong, 5 and 6 string's are awesome, but i'm a 4string man all the way.

I just bought a five string american series jazz bass. I was so clueless I didnt even know that the top string is not an E string. A guy at Guitar Center said some buy a set of 6 string bass strings and put the five on the five string bass. Is having the low B note really benefitial? If so, I need help with my playing. If anyone can offer me somewhere to start I'd be most appreciative. Thanks!
