I have and love both types of basses. But your love of punk music leads me to suggest the Precision Bass with roundwound strings for you ... and a pick! Driving 8ths...baby!

Good Luck

I would also recommend a pbass for punk music, but if you already own a pbass copy, I would go for a Jazz bass. You will enjoy the versitality of the jazz!

If you can afford the ~$1000 USD for an American Standard p bass with the S1 switch then that would be ideal since the S1 also give you reasonable J tones also.

If not try the Reggie Hamilton J bass, the one made in Mexico, not the $2300 custom shop version. It has a J bass bridge pick up and P pick ups and being active with a active/passive switch you have a lot of tonal variations. The Drop D tuner is also a cool thing. I think it retails for $749 now.

Good luck in whatever you buy

Go with a Jazz bass. There's simply more versatility. If you roll off the back pickup and pluck close to your neck joint (like Duck Dunn or James Jamerson) you can get a fat sound really close to the P-bass.

I agree, I have both kinda, my Power Jazz Bass Spc is a Pbody w/J/neck, and my Jazz Bass is a Squire VM, so, yeah, get both :)

I play a little of everything, and back in 98 bought an American Deluxe 5-string Jazz bass, and now that I'm getting into playing punk, and faster metal, I'm regretting the jazz bass, and am shopping for a P-bass, for tone, and string spacing purposes.

Both! Your best bet is to go to your local store, play both and see what sounds the best. Fender makes a few P-basses with a Jazz bridge pickup. Try them out as well. I have a few of each and like them all for different reasons. A Jazz usually has a thinner neck and have more tone options, P-basses are more of a no frills "just plug it in" bass and are probably the most recorded bass of all time.

Just for the fun of it, how about trying out an Aerodyne J-Bass? They have [b]both a split-pickup like the one on the P-Bass and a straight one like the one on the J-Bass. Even though my American-made P and my American-made J put a dent in my bank account, the lower-priced Japanese Aerodyne kicks such butt, you won't believe the sound for that kind of money!

In my humble (but ever so noisy) opinion, that was the best deal I have gotten so far with my Fenders. I love the heavy sound I get from the Aerodyne. My only complaint with it is the size, nothing else. It plays like an expensive instrument, looks pretty cool in all-black, but for me at barely five feet tall, it's just too big.
