I've been following Red Paul's "Do you use Flatwound Strings?" thread and trying to figure out the same thing, Alex. I want strings that can cross over from classic rock like Pink Floyd and Steely Dan to the heavy chops of Rage Against the Machine and Sepultura. What says the panel to Alex and me?

I have DR String Black Beauties (round wound), which I really like. I also have Fender 9050 (Flat .55 to .110 gauge) on my VM. I like both, since the VM is passive, the strings give it a nice sound to it. The brightness on the Power Jazz Bass Spc is due to the Black Beauties. There are lots of good strings out there, most are what people prefer for their own sound. So go try 'em out.

This can be answered but unfortunately may take years to come to the right conclusion. And even then may be subject to change with or without notice! Keep in mind experimentation is half the fun in this game we play.
That said I would start with any "good" NPS nickle plated steel roundwound string like the 7250's for rock. Hope this helps.
Enjoy the journey, above all.

Many of the most popular bass players (Geddy Lee, Duff, John Paul Jones) use rotosound strings. I know Geddy uses Swing Bass 66 strings. They're also very inexpensive from Big City Strings and American Musicians Supply, $20 a set.

I agree, rotosound round wounds would be a good choice i reckon. :D

I use Curt Mangan Stainless Steel. They have great tone and punch and last longer than DR. They cost a lot less too. Check them out at www.curtmangan.com

I used to use Fender 7150's on my '96 American Standard Jazz, but they are too hard to find in Toronto.
I've switched to GHS Boomers and they are great. Classic rock tone and they last forever. I play very hard and used to break alot of E strings. I still haven't broken a GHS string.

On my fretless Mexican Standard I put on a set of Tomastik-Infeld flats and it made all the difference in the world. They are a bargain at the approx. $50.00 a set that I spent. I think those strings will last me 10 years(I play them with a lot less intensity) or more. Superb fundamental, perfect low tension, wicked mid-range growl. The best strings I have ever used.

Another thing to consider is technique. Most people try to obtain things such as certain sounds by using some sort of technical gadget or accessory, when all they need is to apply a little technique. When it comes to string selection your bound to have as many opinions as there is manufacturers and guages/types.

For any type of string, no matter what country, try JustStrings.com. It's where I get my Fender strings that my local stores don't stock.

Well..........If you read my post above you can tell that I have been a diehard flatwound player for quite a while.I was in picking up some essentials at my local music store when the owner told me to check out a Jazz that they just received from Fender. The bass played great but what floored me was the tone from the strings. I asked and he told me they were Fender Superbass Roundwound. They had Black silk on the end so I think they were the 7150's and they were Med Light. Man, they had that clean clear round bottom that I used too love in the Dean Markley strings years ago. I hate too leave the flatwound world but the Fender strings sounded nice on the Jimmy Reed shuffle riff.....who knows maybe I'll have too try them out.

The moment I got my Jazz bass I put on some DR black beauties and by far they are the best strings. Try them and you will not look back
