Why does my [Fender Jazz Bass,made in mexico] have this ser., number... I'm sure 1st 2 letters are , MZ, Then i think the next one is 5[five] but it looks different then the other 5 it has in rest of ser., number. Then on next one after first five i don't know if it's a zero or capital O,or for that matter could possibly be a capital Q?? :roll: . That being said , Here's whole thing ....
MZ5095234
Fingerboard is dark rosewood with 20 frets with the lighter color maple neck.it has 2 pickups and chrome hardware. but the pick gaurd is white?
Why can't i find this anywhere on line??? :?:

Its a 05 MIM jazz bass,M is for Mexico,Z is the new decade in the Millenium,and 05 is the year(2005=05)Usually on the Mex standard(even some american made have white pickgaurds)the pickgaurd is a off-white or eggshell which comes stock on the Mex,very common.
Its one of Fenders best selling lines,its called the Mexican "standard" and theres a TON of info about this bass all over the net,you should have no trouble finding out what you need to know,Its very popular and its info is easy to locate. :mrgreen:

Its what we do here;Helping others that are'nt as addicted to knowing all there is about Fenders,I had people help me in the beginning and would have learned some costly lessons had'nt not been for them,So I pass on freely what was given me in hopes of almost everone being able to help themselves eventually.

RIGHT ON !
It's in great shape and I was going to sell for $300.00 with strap ,road runner case and a new set of ROTOSOUND Jazz Bass 77 Long scale ,standard gauge strings. Does that sound like a fair deal?Were all the jazz basses from mexico 45 inches long?Thanks again. :mrgreen:

Around here $300 is a fair price for the bass alone if in excellent to mint condition with no issues. I'd throw in the generic strap free and strings are also a given no matter how new or old. If that is a hard case I'd bump the asking price to $375 and take $350. If it is a gig bag, bump it to $350 and take $320. A decent hard case ought to be worth $50.

300.00$ is a good ruff number to go with,go on e-bay and you can get a better idea of what they are going for,Fenders usually hold value and thats from the budget Squier's right up to the Custom shop basses and all the models in between.
Remeber that a used music store will not pay the re-sale amt,they usually give 1/3 the cost of new to make 1/3 profit from it,on-line or a privete sale will give YOU the 2/3 rds the cost,not the store.
g/luck :mrgreen:

A friend of mine and long time fan/supporter of our band gave me an '05 MIM Jazz yesterday! Nice sunburst finish :mrgreen: with a rosewood fingerboard.He gave me a soft case,leather strap,and a set of XL Super Steels Extra Lights.I took it home and gave it a good cleaning,put the new strrings on,set the action and intonation,and WOW! This is a real player! I can't believe he just gave it to me. Just a few mods that I wanna do..change the pick-guard to a black or black pearl,install a JZ-3 Preamp,StrapLoks,and a new bridge,either a Bad $@! or a Hipshot Trem.There is a ding on the paint at the lower side of the left bottom bout but other than that not too bad.I may re-paint it Mint or Seafoam Green or maybe even stain it.We'll see.
It plays like butter..I LOVE IT!

Here's a guide to Dating Mexican Made Fenders;
SERIAL NUMBERS;
MN0+ 5 DIGITS-1990-1991
MN1+ 5 DIGITS-1991-1992
MN2+ 5 DIGITS-1992-1993
MN3+ 5 DIGITS-1993-1994
MN4+ 5 DIGITS-1994-1995
MN5+ 5 DIGITS-1995-1996
MN6+ 5 DIGITS-1996-1997
MN7+ 5 DIGITS-1997-1998
MN8+ 5 DIGITS-1998-1999
MN9+ 5 DIGITS-1999-2000
MZ0+ 5 DIGITS-2000-2001
MZ1+ 5 DIGITS-2001-2002
MZ2+ 5 DIGITS-2002-2003
MZ3+ 5 DIGITS-2003-2004
MZ4+ 5 DIGITS-2004-2005
MZ5+ 5 DIGITS-2005-2006
With the year 2000 came the introduction of the "Z" prefix serial numbers on US made instruments, which stood for the 0 of the new millennium. A Z0 prefix dates to 2000, a Z1 prefix dates to 2001 etcetera. The American Deluxe Series instruments use the same dating convention but with the addition of a "D" in front of the "Z", i.e. DZ1, DZ2 etcetera. Once again, and as always, there is typically some overlap and carryover of number prefixes from year to year.
