i've got a question,

as an owner of a jazz bass, i was wondering if the style has changed that much since the origin of the jazz bass.

if so, what year jazz bass would be the best to buy

Well, it depends on how you look at what is the best year for a Fender Jazz. There are so many ways to look at this question that would take hours. If money is no object and investment potential is a criteria then an early 60's stack knob. Sound/tone wise is very subjective some like the 70's J others the Pre-CBS golden years of 1962/3 and earlier basses.

For the modern era, I personally like the new Jazz basses with the s1 switch, and then again, some purists hate the s1.

My wishlist if money was not a concern would be:
1961 matching headstock any color stacked knob J bass
mid-70's maple fingerboard with block inlays 3 bolt neck

For the most part, most collecters agree that the mid 80's to mid/late 90's Fender's are crap esp. from an investment standpoint.

It's really such a hard question and very subjective question to answer and each person will have their own opinon and for different reasons.

My favourite year to collect is 1966, that year you could get a ton of options, like painted headstock, block inlay & binding, dots and binding...and the super cool oval tuners were offered that year.

IMO the early to mid 70's Jazz bass was just and incredible instrument, but for the last 8 years or so I've been a 60's J bass fan.

Check out the Roscoe Beck IV. A different approach to a classic sound. It has a 60's vibe with modern amenities, minus the batteries (passive electronics)!
