Hi all,
While on vac in Mass last week. I purchased a lefty sunburst standard jazz (MN8 - 1998/99)
($279 U.S. I dont know if I over paid but when you are a lefty timing is everything!) looks & plays pretty good (just need to tweek it a bit) new strings & add a t.shell pickguard & Chrome Fender tail piece, (I will post pics once I get the add ons.)
To me it sounds the same as my 2008 mim jazz) yet they upgraded the jazz around 2006/07..

I can't find much info on the 1998/99 model year like body, is it basswood or poplar, ceramic or alnico type pups etc etc.
I have some old fender frontline mags from that yr and all it says is the usual details.

Anyone have anymore info they can share that would be great.
thanx!

Basswood is about right, its a decent tone wood used by Fender Japan still to this day,and the pick-ups should be alnico I dont think they gave the MIM ceramic pickups and the American stuff got stuck with the alnico, there would not be dancing in the streets it would be more like Riots in the street  .
As far as a discernable diff between your two Mim basses that are about 10yrs or so apart is probably almost impossible to do,Trying to pick the little nuiances of one basses tone compaired to the other ones is a feat in itself worthy of Sainthood.
I am no fan of the MIM stuff and them sounding close to being un-distinguishable is right up the MIM's alley, probably a soundboard would be able to isolate each ones un-molested sound and allow them to be compaired against one another,But again who would want to,its not really that pertinent but if so then swap the pickups out for some 62 re-issues! That will set them apart.
