Hello.

So, I am a long time guitar player, and a while ago my uncle gave me his old Jazz bass.

It's an odd piece, as the neck is actually from a P-bass and the body is that of a jazz bass.

The p-bass neck I've actually identified as being made in 1965, but I can not figure out what the markings inside the head mean.

I have some pictures and was wondering if anyone could help out. It's a cool bass, but I'm not a bassist and unfortunately, it looks like I might have to sell it. If I do though, I don't want to just unload it, I want to get what it's worth and hopefully someone who is going to properly take care of it will be the buyer.

Anyway, here's some pics. Thanks for any help. :)

Not much to really go on,the pics are a close up of a neck pocket that really does'nt contain much info,I suggest taking the pickgaurd off and the metal control cover that houses the pots and wiring.
The pots IF original will have some type of serial numbers on them on stamped on the flat part located on the bottom of the pots, even the tone capacitor may indicate a general time frame of the bass via its design/color ETC...
Even the spacing of the bridge pickup in its distance to the bridge can shed some light on a general time frame of construction,SOMETHING on the body can help you just need to take the right pics,if someone here does'nt know then I doubt anyone can help you, these guys know they're $@!&,is there possibility it may not be a true Fender body?are you 100% sure its a Fender if not you'll knock yourself nuts trying to date the bass.
GOODLUCK :?:

Well, I've had a local guy who knows his stuff fairly well examine it and he told me it was definitely legit, just couldn't give me an exact date or anything. That's when I decided to open it up myself.

I'll try opening up the back and see what I can find, what type of numbers should I be looking for and is there any kind of guide I can use for serial number dating on these things?

Tone pots serial was 03237 250K AUD 304-6617. Couldn't actually get a good pic with my phone, the number was a little too faded for it to recognize (and it's a good camera phone, lol).

Here is a pic of the underside of the neck pickup, but I have no idea how to, or if you can date the pickup.

The "304-6617" EIA code on the tone pots correlates to parts made by Stackpole in the 17th week of 1966.

http://www.triodeel.com/eiacode.htm#pots

Thus, they seem somewhat consistent with the ink-stamped date code on the heel of the neck.

Offhand, I'd opine that the instrument is both legitimate and authentic (disregarding the missing factory paint finish). The other appointments (11-screw pickguard, tug bar, pickup cover, bridge, etc) seem to be genuine. The pickup and control-cavity routs should be shielded with brass sheet-stock, with some foam rubber strips below each pickup.

Glad you found out what you needed to know,I was'nt inferring your bass was'nt a real Fender, its not out of the ordinary for someone to put a Vintage neck on a body that may not be the same brand or design(seeing how the neck is the single most important piece of a bass)but having it apart takes all the guess work out of narrowing down all the possibilities.
Good luck with the bass, take your time selling it and avoid a unusually quick to buy it store, stick with a consignment shop or a reputable music store NOT a chain type superstore who will not pay you even half the value, your no rookie with guitars get what you should for it,but try to hold on it will only go up in value its a bad time to sell.
