The guitar dater project is generally a great place to put in the serial number and get a date it was manufactured, however, the one you provided didn't bring up anything. Recheck the serial and put it in on this page.

HI guys.
I really don't believe that site is accurate?
It dates my Marcus Miller 4 to "Fuji-gen. 1994-1995"
And why don't I believe that?
Because production only started in 1999, and I bought
the bass Saturday feb 26th 2012, brand new....
Eh? I don't get it...

Fender Japan started reusing alpha numeric sequences for some reason. Therefore there can be two instruments out there with very similar serials but one is new and the other is nearly 20 years old. Fender Japan instruments have been made by 3 different contractors since 1984 which might be part of the reason this happened and also is for sure why CIJ/MIJ instruments are so hard to date. However the MADE IN JAPAN and CRAFTED IN JAPAN may make a difference when dating them by serial. Japanese serials have always been somewhat inexact, more inexact than even USA or MIM ones. This reuse of sequences will make dating by serials nearly impossible and in 20 or 30 more years there will be a huge mess. If you bought it brand new in 2012 it is probably 2009 or up. I bought a brand new CIJ Fender bass one time that was already 3 years old by the time I got it. It was brand new in the box and I was the first one to take it out.

I think that if your instrument has a "CRAFTED IN JAPAN" decal on the back of the neck just above the body joint that the R084502 serial would have been from 2004 or 2005. That is a zero and not the letter "O" like in ocean. It is common in Japanese serials to only be able to narrow them down a two or three year period. As far as I can tell from my research, that serial was never used on a "Made In Japan" Fender.

((edited "ever" to "never.)))

Yeah that's true, I have a MusicMan Stingray, which was 07' when I bought it as the first owner in 2010.
My MM4 is "Made in Japan" and says T006612.
It is interesting, as a Fender dealer told me that there are tons of MM4s in Europe, apparrently just sitting around not getting sold!
It was actually the "12" that intrigued me :-)
"Tokyo, the zeroeth of sixtysixth 2012" maybe? *lol*
My "Moment of Zen" - of course from a Jazzie :-)

They must ship those over on sister ships of the Costa Concordia and they take the scenic route perhaps?

There are lots of sites to check serial numbers. Just google Fender Japan serial numbers and it comes right up.

Question for everyone: I have a truly mint condition Fender Power Jazz Bass Special, E serial number (1984-1987), pearl white, perfect. What's current value for insurance purposes? Any ideas?

Yep that is an accurate date, for the FIRST instrument with that serial format sequence! For whatever reasons Fender Japan started REUSING the SAME serial number format sequence a year or two ago from 94-95. Nuts, crazy and totally unnecessary! This is creating confusion as the numbers crunch to the wrong century. They should have added one more digit or a double alpha character.

You can't go lambasting FMIC for it. They just license the brand name to Fender Japan who pulls all their own strings totally independent of FMIC including administrating their own serial formats.

In the past Fender Japan has done some other wacky stuff but this takes the cake.

This conceivably could put the legit owner of a new Fender Japan instrument in a pickle in a number of ways. Not a good decision. Japanese serials have always been tough to nail down and this makes it worse. Frequently you could only nail one down to a 3 year range as it was. But with this decision, 20 or 30 years from now it will be almost impossible without first-hand knowledge of the provenance to date one if it has one of the conflicting serial sequences.

For insurance purposes you really need a written appraisal from a noted authority that the insurance company can't dispute. A "free appraisal" here or elsewhere isn't worth anything when dealing with an insurance company and they are going to low-ball you. I suggest George Gruhn at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville Tn. Check out his website and go to the link for appraisals. He does online photo appraisals for $50. In person appraisals get pricey. But for insurance purposes photo appraisals are adequate on instruments under $2,000 in value. He is the number one authority on instrument values in North America and perhaps the world. An insurance adjuster is more likely to respect his appraisal more than about anyone else.

They are scarcely seen for sale anymore. Based on this scarcity I'm very hesitant to quote what they would bring here now because I honestly just don't know. A couple of years ago there were more of them around in the used market and they were going for $600 to $900. Mostly around $700. Based on the prices seen a couple of years ago and the infrequency with which they show up now, I'd expect they are worth slightly more now, but just how much more I don't know. Being DEAD MINT yours would get a premium over others in lesser condition, maybe 20%.

Even if I knew exactly what one would bring here now, then the value there could be higher or lower there based on local market conditions. They do have value, but it isn't what I'd call huge and probably a bit less than a USA Standard of the same vintage in the same mint condition.
