After having only my 66 P Bass since 1969, I finally broke down and bought a new 62 vintage J Bass. When I got it home and was inspecting it I see I have an option to install either the foam strip under the Bridge cover or the felt mute assemblies. My old P Bass has neither, and I am wondering about the pros and cons of installing one or the other or neither. I will definately mount the bridge cover, and am unsure about the pickup cover. I would love to hear from others about their experience with string mutes.

If you've played without them since 69, why bother now?
You've obviously learned to mute as needed without them.

+1

One needn't to be a rocket surgeon to figure out how to pick an eighth-note without the assistance of a mute.

The foam weathershiping was usually the first thing that any bassist I knew tossed -- usually before backing out of the music store's parking lot on the trip home with the new bass.

It's all a matter of preference, I've got more muting material than you can imagine. When I was doing a lot of Motown, covering Jamerson material, I collected a lot looking for the right stuff.

It's not like you HAVE to use it all the time.

One thing I will say, I haven't found ANYTHING to even partially mute Sabre.

I strongly advise the "Thumb Mute" technique. You mute the strings with the ponky edge of your plucking hand against the bridge and pluck with your thumb, and/or first 2 fingers (Depends on your technique).

I've talked to you enough and heard the strain in your sweet, gentle wife's voice. Oh, we will meet some day, I'm looking forward to it.

Damn, a warm and fuzzy moment.

O.K., back to character.

Concerning the "Magic Bus Tour", we have to stress safety first, so after discussing it with the "Safety OIC", we decided to give you you own special seat.

Thanks for the feedback, Should have been more clear.
Yes, I have been doing thumb and palm mutes, (amongst others) I just was taken aback by having not 1 but 2 options to mute strings, and didn't know whether or not to venture into new territory to recapture older more classic sounds. To date, have left them off. I play more classic rock, and blues, but also want to venture into swing. One of the reasons to get a J Bass was to capture a wider spectrum of sound. It sounds like no one has installed any mute- so I deduce they are a historical addition only, and add nothing to the sound quality or value of the guitar ( though I am keeping the hardware in the case).

I think Puppywise would let the new friend understand just who was in charge.

I'm very familiar with his breed and was amazed at their dominance of bigger dogs.
