I will shortly be assembling my FrankenJazz. (1968-71-ish Precision Neck, 200? Alder Jazz Body). I'm just waiting on the 4-bolt neck plate.

I've seen basses both with and without rubber or plastic gaskets under the 4-bolt neck plate.

What is the thinking on these?
a) Use a gasket for sonic reasons
b) Use a gasket for structural reasons
c) Use a gasket to be period correct
d) No way - gimme steel and wood

I had to order the four-bolt neck plate, and I'm not sure whether or not the kit will come with a gasket, so I need to know if I should worry about it. Thanks!

Probably unnecessary. And the Fender neck plates include only the mounting screws.

Save your money.

Some guys like to tighten the neck screws untill the metal around the corners of the plate bends in on all four corners and makes big indents on the body under where the plate is. Once you do that and you put a new neck plate on the body there are gaps between the body and the plate. The old plate is warped- the new one is straight. The body is dented in-- in needs fixed or never put a new plate on it. Plus it looks funky when the plate is all curved in. The gasket helps combat this . The neck does not need to be so tight that it bends the neckplate. I think it's all about that.

I owned a few basses that had them,my advice if bass had it,put it back on,if bass did'nt have it,no need, why? if it was on there stock taking it off may be ok,but adding one where one was'nt may not give a supertight fix to the body, why change something if it is'nt broken, poor neck/body cohesion can over time cause moisture which can(not always, not usually, but CAN)cause the neck at the end of the fretboard to raise up and make some fret noise, commenly referred to as the Fender cowtounge(tung?)I have seen it in basses which were shimed way high to compensate for a lousey neck.

A guitar pick neck shim over years will do that in some cases. Not a good idea to slap a medium or heavy pick in the neck pocket of a guitar for a shim. What kind of dink wheat thought of that anyway?
