Good one, Rev. Where did you find "What Would Keith Do....?" I'll have to do a search for that. I DVR'd the segment with him on Jimmy Fallon last night....hilarious Twitter question: What song(s) do you like to play when you're alone?, or something to that effect. Keith: The next one. Maybe you had to be there. He'll probably be pissing on our graves. Do get a copy of Life.

Those are killer p-ups indeedy! I have them in my 60th anniversary Fender american standard Jazzbass, the came stock w/62 vintage re-issue custom shop jammies and they sound so much different and a little bit better than stock ones,I am sure even more noticeable from MIM pick-ups,I really hear the dif. when I use the S-1 switchpot it really takes it to a whole new level,Fender says it makes a Jazzbass sound more like a p-bass and Vice-Versa but I dont hear a p-bass I hear a jazzbass on steriods is the best way to describe it,I LOVE'EM!~

I found it in the music section of Barnes and Noble. I saw a comedian years ago who said "The only 2 things that will survive a nuclear bomb are Cockroaches and Keith Richards. He'd be wandering around going 'where is everybody. I saw the bright lights and thought we were on.'"

I'm also interested in checking out "The Tao of Willie" which is the same type of thing with Willie Nelson. I have a nagging suspicion they're going to do the same type of thing with Charlie Sheen soon.

lawsuit--Yeah, those Custom Shop pu's make a huge difference over the MIM's The old ones were pretty noisy and would even occasionally feed back when using a lot of top with an Ampeg BA-300 2x10 at medium volumes. All gone now. Amazingly quiet even with treble maxed and tube preamp in the Ampeg.

pbassbob--Love that picture, and the Keith comment by sabre is dead on. I guess I thought the same thing when I was 16 and he was about 21. That sure enough dates me. Guess it worked, because my first date with my current wife was a Winos concert in Pittsburgh in '92!

Still have to get some shots (pun intended) of my bullet-riddled '76 and finish that story.

I have a T-Shirt with a picture of Keef from back in the day with him leaning against a wall in customs at JFK airport next to the sign that says "Patience Please a Drug Free America Comes First."

I saw another t shirt with a picture of Keef with the caption "The Truly Evil Thing About Heroin is That it Doesn't Always Kill You".

I've also read that Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy from Motorhead, and Keith Richards are all leaving their bodies to science to try and figure out how they managed to live as long as they have given their lifestyles.

Here's a picture of the wounded '76. The bullet hole is starting to reappear through the wood putty. After about 26 years or so I guess that's not surprising. Rest of story to follow. If anyone wants to see pics of the rest of this relic let me know.

First, I *will* describe the gruesome shooting of my '76 p-bass. I've been a busy old fart lately.

Secondly, Sabre, you mentioned sticking a SPB-1 Duncan in my '64 until I can afford and/or find a genuine '64 pickup. You said it will make the thing sound more like a '64, which the ancient Duncan in there now does not do...or at least make it sound like I *think* it should.

If you could tell me your experience(s) with the SPB-1 I'd really appreciate it. Obviously I don't want to operate on the '64 without some good info.

Thanks. I really appreciate it. And anyone else...feel free.

Thanks for the reply, Sabre...much appreciated. I did a little research and came up with the same conclusion on the SPB-1 Duncan. Good call on the flats...I haven't used them for so long I wasn't even thinking about that. Ah, advancing age...

The SPB-1 is reasonably priced, so I think I'll grab one. Is LaBella still the choice of flats? Anyone tried Tomastiks? I used Fenders back in the day, er...the olden days on the 'way 'way back machine. I don't know any bass dogs that use flats anymore so I'll have to rely on you guys once again. The '64 is being used for essentially for blues, so traditional is definitely what I'm looking for. And I thank you for your thoughts. This is a great forum.

Thanks again, Sabre, The D'Addario Chromes sound quite good from your description, and perhaps I'll locate up a set. It would be nice to do an old Magic Sam tune and then push it up with,...say, a Coco Montoya without having to reload with another bass. I'm gathering that this is part of your meaning.

I've been using the brutally accosted '76 (ooops; still haven't revealed the gory details) for the tunes needing more volume. It's got old DiMarzios and Roto 66s, and still puts out a nice punchy sound.

The Duncan Antiquities - I've bought way more of those than I ever should have. They are scatter wound and the pickups are all just a little different just like back in the vintage days. I've had decent ones and then I 've had a couple sets of Jazz Ant. that were really great Pu's. They stay within a certain range. I think I'd get a set for that P that are real close to 11K or 11k-- those may be a little hotter. The 64 I played that belonged to a friend had a nice loud output and very clear even tone-- it was sweet. The Jazz antiquities I have are like that - keepers.

Sabre, you have me sold on the chromes. Sorry about the obscure blues references, but check them out. If you're into blues at all, you'll like them both. Sam==kicked back '60's Chicago; catch "Easy Baby" Coco=contemporary left coast. He played with Albert Collins so you know he's no slouch.

If you can go all the way from Jamerson to Squire, that's amazing. BTW, just saw a Yes gig on Palladia a month or so go ago. Mr. Squire sounds better than ever. After trying to learn that Roundabout riff 'way back I figured this is one guy I will *not* try to cover. Wise move.

I grew up listening to all the Motown Jamerson stuff on 45's on bottom shelf equipment, so I never really heard a lot of his lines until much later. Back then those tunes sounded like they were recorded in a shoebox but what amazing stuff! Ever watch "Standing in The Shadows of Motown DVD? Bob Babbitt (from Pgh, I live nearby) outdid himself on the P during that show.

Yeah, I'm babbling again...

Sabre--

I feel comfortable with the amp I'm using. We generally play clubs and small venues, so I use an Ampeg BA-300 2x10 with a tube preamp. I got it last year refurbed for $600 plus shipping (after getting rid of two old SUNNs, a GK and a solid state Fender Rumble...kept another Rumble for practice) and so far it's worked quite well. I'll still exploring the myriad of tones you can get out of this thing, especially with the Road Worn J I put the custom shop pickups in. If we hit a bigger place I run through the PA but that's rare.

I'm really looking forward to sticking the new Duncan in the '64 and trying the D'Addarios, and once again my sincere appreciation to you and the rest of the folks for being so helpful. I should have jumped in a long time ago.

Almost forgot to give +10 for the pool metaphor. That really nails it.

I never particularly liked the feel of them, but I'm anxious to give them a try after all these years.
When I first picked up a Fender, around 1965, I think all of them were shipped with flats, Am I right about that? The only new Fender (or any other bass) I ever owned was a '69 P and I'm positive it came with flats. I doubt if I even knew round wounds existed then.

Sabre, if you redid your fingers in a week, that sounds promising. I do remember getting my first set of Rotos and tape wounds (I don't remember which came first) and how much I liked them....lacking the stiffness, especially the Rotos, that you mentioned.

How about a thought or two for all the tornado victims. Absolutely horrible. They just said Joplin was a 5. Oklahoma City hammered now. My wife and I are going to make a donation right now....just hard to decide to whom. I want the money to go right there, right now. I know it's really off topic, but if anyone has a suggestion beyond the usuals, please let me know. Had a bad experience with Red Cross after doing a ten-band fundraiser following Katrina. Thanks.
