When I tired of rock bass( how much can you practice "A"?) I started into exploring Jazz stuff. Not only did it make me a better bassist ( just like driving a semi truck makes you a better car driver) it got me on track with my right hand. To play some of the Jazz chops you have to control your right hand and even kind of hold it differently. At least I did. It's not easy to make the right hand fluid enough to do Jazz the right way. I even shortened my strap and moved the bass up a bit. You won't see Jazz bass players playing a bass down by thier knees.

Dismissing Jazz bass in any way or form is dismissing all bass playing. It wouldn't do you a bit of good (at playing bass) to say you don't like Jaco. It will do you good to explore what he was doing. It opens up any other style of bass. I can play "A" many different ways now  compared to when I just hacked it out in Rock! That doesn't mean I don't like rock and it doesn't mean I'm a Jazz freak. It means it's an education. Why limit yourself on an instrument.

So I play Classic Rock in a band and I really enjoy it for lots of reasons and don't enjoy some of it too. Jazz is not really popular here where I live. That's kind of a bummer.

Unfortunately Jazz (as great as it is) has a limited audience in most places (here in North America) I grew up in Montreal (there's an amazing thriving Jazz & Arts scene there)
I later moved toVancouver in the early 1990's & while there's not hugh support for Jazz out here on the west coast it does have a following.

I'm primaraly a rock bassist like yourself but the thirst & need to explore the bass further
( along with my curiousity with regard to bassists like Stanley Clarks & Jaco & my love & appeciation for jazz) started pushing me in this direction to better my self on my instrument....I will always be learning.

It's been said that even if you love pop or Rock music always try to learn some jazz or Classical music even if you never play it in a band as it will make you a better well rounded musician when you play Rock or pop.

Look at bands like Yes, Genesis,Rush, Supertramp, Queen, ...etc

There are plenty of "Jazzy" areas within classic rock. Listen to some mid 70's Greatful Dead. "Eyes of The World" has it's moments when played right. If you get a chance check out a group called "Jazz is Dead" Featuring T.Lavitz, Billy Cobham, Alphonso Johnson, and Jimmy Herring adapting Greatful Dead tunes to instrumental fusion arrangements.

I've also read a couple of books on The Allman Brothers Band that mentioned their love for Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" album. Every time I hear "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" I swear I can almost hear a Salsa Band.

Speaking of Salsa listen to Santana. There is more than a little Jazz in there too.

There is plenty of jazz influence even in classic rock it just sort of snuck in.

Stay Brown,
Rev J

Hey... I think I prefer the neck pick-up, that may be the reason....
Jaco is very "bridge" pick-up

But, yes, he is a legend!

I appreciated Jaco especially when I tried to play Donna Lee and a few other tunes of his, I come from a technique point of view. Plus I heard him live and up close and there was tons of tone coming out of the Acoustic amps. Those amps produced thier sound "live". Not so much of that Acoustic amp sound carries over to the studio. Best example of live is on the "8:30" live album- and then it's not all the way like an acoustic sounds live. It has alot to do with the big sound wave coming from those cabinets.

I will agree that he was bridge related in tone but it was the 70's and 80's. These days I'm sure he would have better recorded sound than back then. Bass has come a long way.

When I play my Jazz Bass, I use to set all 3 to 10 (2 volume and the tone).
If I wish to sound a little bit like a P bass, I put the bridge pick up to 5 or so...
