His tone was too gargly and pinched for my taste. I don't like it when a bassist sounds like someone gargling. There is no beauty in that for me.

That was a GREAT one! I wish it would surface and be placed in a place of honor. If it ever does show up, some Dink, or Guitar Center will snatch it up!

I love Jaco's tone, I also have a Jaco Fretless Jazz bass in my collection......& as it's been said on this forum.... Jaco's tone was a very mid range tone with a low end punch.
Anyway after messing around with the sounds & tones on my Jaco Bass I managed to figure out how he got his tone, I believe Jaco rolled off 3/4 of the volume on the neck pick up with full volume on the bridge pickup & from what I've read he used an octaver .... I then messed around with the settings on my SWR Headlite coupled with a SWR Workingpro 4 x 10 cabinet...I set the Bass & Mid each to 3 O'clock & the treble to 9 O'clock I then adjusted the tone with the aural enhancer (a feature on all SWR heads) the end result was amazing I pretty much recreated Jaco's tone.
Now I'm not saying these amp settings will work on all amps as I later tried to duplicate the same sound on my other amp a Fender Bassman 150 & it didn't have as much Punch.
Anyway thats my experience with trying to recreate Jaco's tone.

This doesn't surprise me as Steve Rabe (the founder of SWR) was Jaco's amp tech. The initial designs for SWR were intended to be an improvement on the Acoustic 360's that Rabe had been working on.

Yes you're right, ... I totally forgot....slipped my mind. Thanks & I gotta say aside from loving Jaco's tone, I love SWR Products, My Headlite is very versitile & powerful for a mico head (400watts) I pair it up with the SWR Amplite (another 400w totalling 800w)
The Aural enhancer on the Headlite has been modified.....there's Classic & modern voicings, like on the Marcus Miller pre amp..(love his tone too.)

You guys should see the big smile on my face. Very refreshing to read those posts (just above this one).

Jaco did have the kind of sound you describe. It worked well with his amp in a bar situation. In the small room the 360 sound wave throws the bass against the walls and the mids fill up the rest - nice! Remember this was in the 70's and 80's. His sound is pretty good on "8:30" live in an auditorium too.

Thanks I agree this is very refreshing conversation regarding this topic, I also like Jaco's sound on 8:30 & on Invitation too.
Has anybody here heard Word of Mouth Revisited? If you haven't it's a gem you should add to your CD collection, Word of Mouth is a Jaco Tribute CD from 2003 with guest bass players like, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooton, Victor Bailey, Christrian McBride, Jimmy Hislap ,Jaco's son & a few others paying tribute to Jaco & reworking some Jaco & weather Report Classics.....Great CD!! ..A must Have to see how these other great artists interpit Jaco's music.

I have heard some of that- I really like Jimmy Haslip- his frettless sound is really nice. I have a bunch of CD's by the guys you mentioned. I play in a Classic Rock band but I love Jazz- not smoothe FM Jazz ( too watered down for me) so much but Bass player Jazz and Fusion. I've lost alot of my Jazz type chops from doing the Classic rock thing. I learned a long time ago to play Jazz bass you have to stay on top of it. Unfortunately I let it go because the band takes alot of my time. I miss my Jazz-- BUT when I go to the beach for vacation-- NO CLASSIC ROCK ALLOWED-- JAZZ ONLY !!!!!! :D :D :D

Like yourself I'm primarily a Rock & Classic Rock bass player & I'm not much of a fan of smooth jazz, I much perfer fusion, classic jazz & chill out jazz.
My style of playing is in the genre of John Entwistle, Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, John Paul Jones (my influences going back to the late 70's when I started to play bass.)

In the Jazz genre I always liked Jaco & Stanley Clarke ( I saw Clarke live last year..great show) In recent years I've become a fan of Marcus Miller (a big fan actually) ...this guy is simply amazing, I read an interview with him were he tells a story about when he started playing with Miles Davis in the early 80's (he was in his 20's) they were on the same tour circuit as Jaco & apearantly Jaco would call him up in the hotel & say OK kid it's time for your bass lesson....he then says the first time he relctantly went to Jaco's room for the lesson but ended up hanging with him a jamming for a good chuck of the day & had an amazing time ... was glad he went for the lesson. (a great story!)

I'm also becoming a big Christian McBride fan (I saw him here in Vancouver last month)
check out his solo effort titled "Si Fi" it kicks as & he does a version of Havona on it as well as reworked versions of Aja & Walking on the moon.
Another kick $@! CD by Christian is Vertical Strings ....He does a killer job on his version of the Weather Report classic Boogie Woogis Waltz.
I also love his current release & traditional Jazz effort titled Christian McBride & Inside Straight " Kind of Brown" the title is a tribute to one of his mentors the late Basssist
Ray Brown, & thats just the tip of the iceberg with regard to great jazz bassists & bassists who were influenced by Jaco....it's endless.
I've recently puchased a couple of books that disect his playing technique & playing style
Pretty cool interesting stuff,...everyday there's a new riff to be learned. LOL

I have a Jaco Pastorius fretless Jazz bass (bought it new in 2008) & as it has been said on these boards before ...a & good part of the sound & technique is in the fingers.

You're right it can't be stressed enough & must continued to be stressed....
I had it drilled in to me by the 2 teachers I had when I was learning how to play bass back in the late 70's when I was 14yrs old.....also the placement of your thumb anchoring it along the middle of the neck , your fingers should be a little hooked so that you hit each note with the tip of your fingers & not the back of the fingers...( this works for me...also the fact that I have large hands....that doesn't hurt either... LOL)

In fact, if I wasn't just about to go out, I'd do it on the NICP forum.... :D

Seriously though, picking hand technique affects one's tone as much as the amp settings and tone pot....
Someone should write something about it to help out the new bassists.

I think even more so. I pretty much don't change my settings but change where I move my picking hand to achieve different tones for different genres.

If I'm walking or playing reggae I'll rest my thumb on the end of the neck. But if I'm playing rock or funk I move my hand back by the bridge pickup. There are obvious exceptions for this rule. For example if I'm going for Stanley Clarke or John Entwistle I will move my hand up to by the neck because that is where they played. Or if I'm switching between Finger Style and either 2 handed tapping or slapping I'll keep my hand up by the neck to easier facilitate moving between those techniques. Then occasionally I'll be going for more of an Anthony Jackson type thing and rather then rely on my bridge pick up I'll use the neck one and possibly move my hand back to do Thumb Muting. I'll do the thumb muting thing alot when playing some types of Reggae lines.

Other wise I run my tone controls wide open and solo my bridge pick up.

Rev J
