I was never that crazy about his tones. It is however ironic that I knew Dean Noel that was in Jaco's first band in the Fort Laudredale, Florida area. I never met Jaco, but I knew a few friends that were in the same high school with him. My cousin did know Jaco in high school quite well.

my friends moved to Ft. Lauderdale in around 73-4 and rented a house. When I went down to stay with them they told me about this great bass player who just moved out of the house behind them (Jaco). I guess that may be when he moved above the laundramat. Jaco would walk down the streets there carrying his bass in one hand with no case just truckin' along going wherever.

Jacos fingers were so long is was just odd.

Great painting. I heard that Trujillo is helping the Pastorius family raise the scratch to put together a documentary on his life.

But they still don't have "The Bass Of Doom,"

There needs to be a biography Doc. I think. It's a very interesting story all the way around. Plus Jaco is relatively unknown still in 2011. We need to see a full blown hour long Doc on the man. After all he did bring something to the music world that changed things. His style, and sound ( I don't care what anyone says) was distinct and noteworthy in the industry. It's a sad story but one that could be good to learn about in many ways. The South Florida music scene in the 70's and 80's- the Fusion movement- ( although Jaco probubly thought WR was all Jazz), fretless bass , the 70's culture, Weather Report becoming so popular- which was unheard of for a Jazz band at that time. I hope the documentary happens. I also hope the family gets the bass back.

There was an infomercial for "The Midnight Special" t.v. show, there was Jaco and Weather Report, doing his thing. Constant tweaking the bass and amp, throwing it in the air after the song.

I hope there is a documentary.

I have read that a documentary is in the works by Bob Bobbing in Florida. There should actually be a full length feature film in this story. There is enough there for at least one really good, but sad movie. It could win best picture. The big problem with that idea is, how could they ever find anyone to play like that who looked enough like Jaco while also being eclectic enough to be believable?

Robert Trujillo last I heard still has the bass and has been filmed playing it. He will sell it back to the family for the price he paid for it, which has not so far as I know been disclosed. When he's not playing it at gigs he keeps it in a secure vault with some other valuable vintage collector class instruments other members of Metallica own.

Here is Robert Trujillo playing The Bass Of Doom live with Metallica:

I consider this akin to Gene Simmons buying the Funk Machine and touring with it! The B.O.D. belongs in a museum.

Yes! A live show early on would have been cool. The later ones didnt sound pretty.

Being a bass player I talk to people at gigs and they ask me stuff about bass and playing and what kind of bass is that and etc. I always think twice anymore about mentioning Jaco. I used to take it for granted everyone knew who he was-- now, about the only people who know who he was/is are bass players and some guitar players. All the more reason for a TV thing. He is as important to the bass guitar as any other landmark musician is/was to thier instrument.

I remember seeing a PBS documentary about 8 years ago about Joni Mitchell that made a brilliant observation about Jaco's time in her band, "It was like listening to a duet with Jacos voice as the male to Joni's female." I don't remember who said it but it was a very astute observation.

Never liked anything I heard from Jaco. I'm just not into that type of bass playing.
His tone was too gargly and pinched for my taste. I don't like it when a bassist sounds like someone gargling. There is no beauty in that for me.
