I heard Jaco live and I've heard his recordings and I would say that I always liked the tone but the recorded sound of Jaco was not the same as live with the acoustic amp he used. Live sound was better. I guess it may have been the "throw" of the cabinet. The album 8:30 Live - not quite like a real live Jaco tone but a little closer. I don't think they ever got it quite right.

Live, the sound had the midrangey tone but the underlying low bass punch was there. That tone could just plant you into the wall. Maybe if I heard the songs on big time studio monitors I would change my mind about recorded vs. live.. Not sure. Acoustic amps of that era had a very distinctive sound live.
Jaco live was the real deal.

The distinctive sound of a fretless Jazz with low action on rosewood has it's own kind of round singing tone for sure. I've heard that tone with alot of Jazz players using the fretless and rosewood and the ebony. Maybe not exact to Jacos tone but pretty close.

I realize that playing live the bass is coming thru the PA in alot of cases. When I heard Jaco it was in a relativley small to medium size club without the amp in the PA. It was just the Acoustic (don't know if it was his or the clubs amp)pumped up and honkin'. He cranked it at one point and did a solo. Maybe that sound can't be transferred to a recording quite like it sounded live.

I'm curious as wether or not people/bass players liked Jacos sound . I read once on another site ( the Nazi site) where some of the guys did not. They went out of their way to trash the tone of the Master. It puzzzled me.

I had the pleasure to see and hear Jaco twice in Toronto.Once at an inside venue Convocation Hall and outside WOM at Ontario Place. It was not only his brite and upright sound. But it reached you from with in as only a bass player would understand. As much as the sound was so dynamic it was the phrasing that really set him above all the others.Listen to Talk to Me on Joni Mitchells album. How does he do that? The Acoustic 360 x2 and the big 15" cabs x 2 plus the MXR really gave him a different sound than the studio.

In the Pocket :P

I think it would be cool that now since they have found Jaco's bass if they made a Jaco tribute bass based on the actual bass instead of a "We knew what the parts were from and have pictures of the wear" type of thing.

It would be cool if it were like a limited edition like the Crossroads Strat or the Bonnie Raitt model with proceeds going to a charity benefiting people with mental illness.

Just a thought.

Especially since Jaco suffered from Bipolar disorder. My significant other suffers from bipolar disorder and so do alot of others in the music industry. I think it is fantastic that the music industry does alot to help people with chemical dependency problems but there is not much being done for people with mental illness.

The thing is that medication is so unbelievably expensive. My fiancees meds are $1250 a month because she fell into the Medicare Part D gap. She has SSI and I work 7 days a week and we are having trouble making ends meet.

I'm sorry this has drifted a little off topic. But that was a thought that I had.

I too suffer from Bi polar but mine is stage 2 so it's no where near the late great Jaco.Yes that may be a good thing for Fender to do but you need to get the bass off Trullio 1st. and that may take some $$$$$.It still is not in the hands of the Pastorius family I believe? AS to the Rev. If you were living in Canada your health insurance would cover it.Oh yes do keep those lame Republicans in office but I digress.

You've nothing to be sorry for, Rev....heck, if you were up in this neck of the woods, I'd be calling all the musicians I know to put together a benefit concert to try and give you guys a hand. We've done this numerous times for people, and it's always been a positive experience, both for the recepients, and for the performers as well.
People helping people....why is that such a difficult concept for so many when it's the most natural thing in the world?
I hope it works out for you, Rev!

Thanks. It has been really rough lately. But whatever happens I'm sure it will be for the best in the long run.

Can someone elaborate on who this Trullio perosn is? I saw the first vid when the bass was put together after it was "rebuilt" with some bandaids and ductape and it vaugely looked like the original with the addition wood used to hold it together but sounded very much like it used to,but that was the last I heard or seen of it.

Trulliloiiliiolill bought the bass for what I heard was 40 thouthand dollars but that could be not right. He either plays in Metallica or with Ozzy-- it's hard to tell becuase they switch back and forth. So who knows? He's pretty good (I guess). I am not especially fond of his playing but that's just me. There's a whole lot of info on the bass and there's some good stuff on Ingrids' website=(jaco's x wife and mother of Felix and Julius). They(posters) claim to know who stold the bass from the basketball court in NY and alot of other interesting things and posters who know/knew the guy.

Last I heard Trujillo was holding on to the bass for Jaco's family. Last I heard Trujillo was still playing for Metallica. It's too bad he is a killing Funk/Metal bassist. Here is some stuff that he would never get to do with Metallica:

It's too bad Metallica would never let him play like that.

"Holding it for Jac's family" ????? I think it's more like " hey I want that bass and I'm going to spend some serious jack to get it. I'll let the family know that if they want to buy it from me they can." The thing is that the family doesn't have that kind of money for the bass. It all nice and stuff of trilljjo to offer it but whos' to say he won't sell it to someone else or just keep it. He played it live at a gig. I think I'd like to have it. I wouldn't play it at a gig though. It's one of the most important basses in the bass world.
