Hi,
Two Questions:

1. Will short scale bass strings fit my Fender American Jazz? I am looking to use strings that have less tension & I have read that short scale strings has less tension.

2. I understand that lighter gauge strings have less tension, however, other than the EB Slinkys, are there any other brands of bass strings that are know to have less tension?

Thanks so much.

Here you go. D'Addario's string gauge tension chart is on this page.

Circle K strings have many, many gauges of strings. They're developing a following. If you choose the balanced option, the gauges are very odd, but the tension is the same from string to string. These guys make really good strings, too. People are raving over them - depth, tone, playability, durability. Quite a few are former Rotosound users.

According to D'Addario's chart, a short scale .050 tuned to G has 44.7 lbs of tension. While a long scale .050 tuned to G has 53.4. That's almost 20% more tension on the long scale strings. It's probably due to the shorter scale neck and not necessarily the strings themselves. After all, the strings are the same gauge. It's always best to get longer strings if you can. You can cut them, but you can't stretch them.

OK, first off short scale basses have less string tension due to less length to tune to pitch. Second off short scale strings probably won't fit on a full scale bass. Short scale strings are designed for basses with about a 30 to 32 inch scale. A Jazz bass has a 34 inch scale so they will be too short.

As for other strings that are available that are lighter:

I'd seriously lean toward the Fordera strings for the simple facts that I've had issues with Rotosounds. Namely that they go dead fairly quickly for me. Granted that could just be my body chemistry. Then there were certain quality control issues that I kept running into like getting a brand new pack and having a dead one in there. Granted that's just my opinion.

Stay Brown,
