Why don't you just say, "They smell funny", "They look stupid", They're as dumb as rocks". Jeez, Mickey, this is the internet in case you forgot.

It's funny that I was born and grew up in Maine. I lived in Miami for about 10 months back in 2000. Now I live in the SF Bay Area.

I went to Miami to try and get settled and start to work as a musician and had no luck. When I looked in "The New Times" under "Live Music" all that was listed was DJ So and So at Such and Such venue, over and over. Although "The Spam Allstars" were playing all the time and they are now one of my favorite groups.

I came to San Francisco for personal reasons. I've started a couple of bands and done some booking. I intern in a recording studio etc. But the live music scene isn't that great. Gentrification has taken hold and alot of the places that had live music can't now due to noise complaints. The venues want bands to play for free and in a last ditch effort to make money venues want bands to buy all of the tickets for the show and guarantee at least $1000 in bar business or the band pays the balance. And SF has a reputation for nurturing new talent.

I went back to Maine about 6 years ago. I picked up a copy of the Casco Bay Weekly/Face Magazine. The funny thing that I noticed was that there was more live music happening in Portland, Maine then in San Francisco, California.

Now I need to get some Cheese.

You're in Maine?
I used to work for a company out of N. Windham and covered most of New England for them until I went into business for myself in 1999.

I can only speak for SWFL, but the scene, even in the northern, woody parts of New England blows anything down here away.

One can only stomach so much Jimmy Buffet. :(

I'm no longer in Maine. I spent my early life there. I visit once in a while. About 10 years ago I wrote music reviews for Face Magazine and got into some good shows for free. I got to see Dick Dale at the Asylum for free. I got to see Entrain who are out of Marthas Vinyard and were Bo Diddley's backing band when he was in New England. There are alot of interesting hybrids that come out of the woods. It's like people who play instruments that don't usually play together jamming and coming up with something new. For example there is a band called Zulu Leprechauns that is a trio of Dulcimer, Electric Bass and Djembe.

I almost have my chops back so soon I should start working on putting a new project together. I'd love to do something like "The Motet". Kind of Jazzy, Funky, Jammy, with alot of percussion.

Stay Brown,
Rev J

Could be worse. We all moan and groan about the weather, it won't stop raining here. Wifey was concerned about humidity in the house, we have not one but two dehumidifiers. One died so I went and bought the biggest one I could find, anything to keep the peace. She's thrilled about it. I told her it was SO powerful. it was taking the water out of the cat's water bowls. I've been taking some of the water out of them every time I go by, she'll figure this out but, for the moment she's amazed and, I'm having fun.

There will be a day of reckoning but at least for now, all is quiet.

You won't be stuck there forever, Mike. Someday you'll have the opportunity to get out. You're way too resourceful to get stuck in a rut.
