I just bought a very gently used 2006 MIA ’62 Reissue Jazz Bass for $900 and I am absolutely loving it so far. I’m ready to get some new strings on it, but it didn’t come with an owner’s manual and I can’t find Fender recommended string gauges anywhere for this bass.

Can anyone help?

2nd question, this bass has the thumb/finger rest installed down below the strings. Is there any issue with me just removing that and putting the same screws back in?

Also, I would also love to see the owner’s manual for this bass if anyone has a digital copy.

Thanks!

Mike

The tug bar is easily removed and the screws need not be re-installed if you prefer. Your choice.

Depending on what sound you're after, you could use flat wounds, 50-105 would be my first choice. If you want roundwound 45-100 work well for me.

Like the previous post said, take off the thumbrest and put the screws back in. You got an awesome deal!

Post some pictures.

I think the thumb rest is the coolest looking thing ever on an old bass. That's how you tell it's old. Why would you want to remove it?-- I guess it's your choice--- many a thumbrest has been removed in the past. I just happen to like them. I also like flat head engines in hot rods- go figure.

I like the look too, I'll be putting them on all my basses before long. All have undergone some type of mod making them look like they're supposed to.

Thanks for all your inputs, I'm ordering a set of some flatwounds to see what they sound like.

Here's some images of my new bass:

Nice bass man! The thumbrest says "vintage". One thing though-- your intonation doesn't look quite right. Sorry it's a habit to notice.

The tortoise guard looks good.

If it were me I'd slap a set of rotosound stainless or nickel 45-105 on it , and jam. I have never worried about frets. I guess the only strings that won't wear down frets are nylon flats. The thing is though if you put those on it you will sound like you're playing inside a 55 gallon drum filled with water.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I’m far from a guitar tech, but when I got the bass, the action was high and the neck seemed a bit concave for my tastes. So, I straightened the neck a bit via a ¾ clockwise turn on the truss (yes I removed the neck to do it).

Then, after lowering the saddles to lower the action, I set in on intonation by adjusting the saddle position using the screws at the butt end of the bridge. It didn’t look right to me either, but that’s the setting where the open string and the fretted 12th play the same note on my TU-2 tuner.

Did I go about this the wrong way?

Still letting him suck you in I see. You'll be building another bass just to put flats on it.

Flats don't give you your sound! When they don't work for you, send them to me! :D

You have the address!

There's no hollow sound coming out of the Marshall MB4410 with the D'Addario ETB92 Nylon Tapewounds onboard the jazz. The older style nylons were somewhat twangy. This has a bottom that is unreal. Full, and rich. It pounds.

If I actually try those someday and they s*ck, you'll be in deep doo-doo! :P

So who's getting testy now?

Flatwound bass strings sound dead to me. I had them on my Sting bass when I purchased it. I played it thru my amp. I just don't get it. That's just me. I can respect anyones opinion when they say they think flatwounds are great. My only question is what do you guys do or play thru or what pedal or preamp or EQ setting do you use to make them ring and honk and sound killer? Do you crank the volume up louder? Maybe I'm viewing this thru a hard rock mindset. That could be throwing me off. Maybe they are good for Jazz and blues and lighter type MOR stuff and I can see that. :?:

in answer to Sabres' question-- we play covers-- Whitesnake, Journey, Aerosmith,Night Ranger, Bon Jovi, ACDC,Led Zep, Forigner, Poison,Van Halen, Sammy Hagar, Nazareth, Ratt, and many others I forget. etc-- all the stuff chicks like. This is not my favorite music but it sure works good for us.

So as you can tell it's loud- heavy and rockin' like Dokken. I play "A" alot. AAAAAAAAAAAAA= $$$$$$$$$$$$$ you know! It's got to have the ring and honk. It's got to paste you to the wall. It's actually not helping my hearing-- but don't equate that with bass tone that I gots to have......... I'm pumped and ready for this weekend. Let's RAWK!!!!!!!!!

Our guitarist Plays Ernie Balls and Mesa Amps-- keyboards - Korg top of the line equiptment-- bass-- AMPEG- GK and FENDER. Our drummer is a big dude - his legs are like tree stumps. His arms are like my legs. We have the nicest stuff(equipt) of the bands around here.... It ARE loud!!! We have a sound company do our Lights and sound for $$$ a night. I need Rotos to do that job.

sorry if I bragged.
