Do the new American Specials, both jazz and precision, have the graphite reinforced necks? Since they advertise them as a step below the American Standard and a step above the Highway One, I would think they do but the specs don't say anything about it. Wouldn't make much sense for the Highway to have it but not the American Special.

Okay, thanks. I was surprised when I read the specs and there was no mention of reinforced neck. The Am Standard and Highway both have it in their specs.

Maybe I'm crazy but I'm thinking of getting rid of my Geddy. I very seldom play it...I use my Am Standard P-bass or my MIM jazz most of the time. I'd like to find one of the Am Specials and also a Highway One and compare the two. The only place around here that has Fender is Guitar Center and I've never saw a Highway One there before.

I don't want to let the air out of your balloon about the Am. Spl.'s. From what I've seen and played of the Hwy. One, and the Am. Spl., save about $200. and get the Hwy. One. Or Spend about $200. more and get the Am. Std. the Spl.'s I've seen and played were pretty rough for an American made Fender. Quality wasn't that great. One I played at a local store kept cutting out. defiantly the bass.
I've had a few Hwy. One Jazz and Precision. The only things that bugged me about them, no Maple fretboards, and the only color I liked was the 3 Color Sunburst. I've had other say what I've said, the Am. Spl.'s appear to be parts basses. The bridges coming out on some of the MIM Std. J and P Basses are a better looking, heavier metal. Same Fender Vintage bridge, just stronger. Compare some if you see the new ones at a dealer.

I'm leaning towards a Highway One but there are none around here to try out. The GC I bought my other basses from has never even had a Highway in the store. I contacted the manager and he said he doesn't know why but they have never had one in the store. I mentioned I would like to play before I pay and also mentioned the other 5 basses and 3 amps I have bought from him...hoping he may get one in for me. Hey, it's worth a try...lol. I prefer maple fretboards also but the sunburst/rosewood would be fine, especially after a tort or black pick guard is added. I'd just like to play one 1st.
Another question about the Highway...I know the paint will "wear" after a while but other than that does the paint or finish feel the same as other Fenders? It seems I've read that the "nitro/paint" has a tacky or sticky feel. What's your take on that?

I just called GC to see if they could get 1 in and let me try it 1st. Doesn't sound too promising...lol.

This is why we need the good old local guitar shops that used to exist...
If I live long enough and get rich enough, I will open one.
(GC has big bucks and is hard to compete with.)

There's a small shop here in town but they only carry Ibanez basses.

In all honesty, Fender has never gone out of the way to really show off the Hwy. One Series. The only way I ever saw a H.O. Bass, was to order it. The grease bucket electronics works well. They do feel and work nice.

I guess I could just order one and hopefully everything will be okay with it. When I bought the MIM Jazz I looked at and played a few to make sure I got one that was put together really well. I'm happy with it. I'd think the Highway One bass should be assembled well...it is made in the USA.
Btw...what are the tapewound strings you have there? I guess I'm asking what kind of sound/tone do they have. Do they have the feel of flats?

The nylons have a rounded feel, but they are so smooth. Very easy on the frets, and fretboards. The sound is great. I would have no problem doing an order for a H. O. The Spl., I believe, is an attempt to get $200. bucks more, for basically the same bass.

I think I may order one. I'm trying to decide on the sunburst or honey blonde. I may have to try some of those strings sometime. Thanks.

Good luck with that decision. From what other players have said, those two are about the two most popular finishes on the H. O. Basses. I really think you'll like the H. O. I would get a hardshell case for it.

I have the hardshell case for my other 2 jazz basses. That one should work I would think. Thanks.

Yes I believe they do,even the HighWay1 now comes with a graphite reinforced neck which is a hundred or so cheaper,Fender dont usually(if ever) up-grade an older model still on the market, while cutting corners on a newly designed bass they are trying to promote, dont make sense to me leaving out a great feature that is a huge selling point.
