Are they typically shielded? My new bass has a bad hum, and when I took it to an authorized Fender service center, they opened up the cavity and there was no shielding.

Hi, I have just bought a 2010 Jaz deluxe American bass and this has not been shielded in any way. The noise and hum was considerable, so much so that in my view it is virtually unplayable. However, I have now shielded the bass and it is much quieter. The biggest porblem seemes to be the shielding of the pickups rather than the control cavity. It is veyr poor that fender don't shield their basses - it could only cost a small sum for them to do this and on their top of the range basses it is criminal that they don't. My advice - get it shielded and make sure the pickups are done as well.

Thanks alan!
update:
The bass was a/b'd with another american deluxe and mine had a lot more noise. They both did not have shielding, so there is more going on with my bass besides shielding. The thing plays (and looks) great. Hopefully this electronics problem can be fixed.

I had the bass shielded (which I still don't know why they don't do it in the factory) and the hum is practically gone. The bass sounds great and is the most comfortable to play -in my opinion.

Normally Fender shields all their basses.

I wonder for WHICH reason the company decided to exclude their new American Deluxe models from the shielding process?

To save money, perhaps?

There should at least be some shielding paint. And in fact there may be some. Shielding paint is inferior to self-adhesive copper foil or aluminum foil shielding. I prefer the copper because you can solder ground wires to it. Any active bass with single coil pickups does tend to hum a lot but proper shielding of pickup and control cavities really helps.
