No stupid questions. The American Standard is a great bass. I don't own one but have played a bunch. You get a quality instrument and a great case.

For what you get in an American Standard, I think the price is reasonable. You'll never lose money, even if you sell it. IMHO

All basses by all major manufacturers are all made the same way. CNC machines cut the bodies and necks. Humans do the fine finish prep like sanding and buffing, then apply the decals, apply finishes, do post finish application polishing and buffing, then do the assembly and set up. This is pretty much standard practice industry-wide.

The difference with the Fender American Standards that separate them from lesser models are numerous. They have better wood in the first place. Wood arrives and is sorted. All the body blanks are the same size but some blanks are way better looking than others. While the obviously superior blanks go to the Custom shop, the Standards get above average wood with the subordinate blanks going to lesser models. Additionally the American Standards have better electronics, better hardware, a better truss rod system, better everything than the imports or even the lesser USA models. They are expertly set up and have to pass multiple inspections at every step of the production process.

The production process goes the same way at Fender's Ensenada plant in Mexico and at Fender Japan. The difference with the American Standard is you are getting the best regular production passive bass Fender can make at a pretty decent price. If you want a great active bass look at the American Deluxe. I have never owned a Deluxe because I like passive basses better myself.

PLUS as Oxfan pointed out, that is a heck of a great case that would set you back easily $170 if you tried to buy just the case.

I hear of lots of people who buy a lesser instrument and almost immediately start throwing dollars at it to make it as good as an American Standard. By the time they finish all the upgrades they could have just bought the American Standard and gotten the better wood in the bargain.

thanks for the answers, really appreciate it! especially brotherdave.

I think I'm going to go order one tomorrow! I've been playing a squier standard jazz bass(swapped with seymour duncan SJB-3, and a Gotoh bridge... I guess I'm one of those people trying to make my bass like an American Standard bass, hehe) which it sounds way better than a Fender Mexico standard... but not quite as good as the American series, which I've been craving to buy one for a long time now. =)

It's not even close. You asked a leading question, as it sounds that you think American made instruments are somehow overvalued. It's not only a question of parts, it's a question of quality control, styling, and overall skill. I've played MIC and MIM instruments and own a couple MIAs now, and the comparison isn't even close.

Hope that helps.

Did I mention that I'm easily provoked and have a way of getting into your dreams?

I wonder if Warmoth has any fretless maple necks. Might be your only option besides doing a Jaco on it.

They work even better with a Soldering Iron. Actually the one time I defretted a bass I used a Soldering Iron, a Hammer, and a Nail Punch. You can heat the fret with the Soldering Iron which will melt the glue. Put the Nail Punch on the end of the fret and give it a tap with the hammer and it will come right out clean. I've read about using this method of defretting older Fenders because they would slide the frets in from the side of the fretboard rather than hammering it in from the top.

Rev J

I was really almost flipping a coin between the Am. Std. Fretless. or the Maple Blizzard Pearl. Either way D'Addario Nylons are onboard for me. Stardust sounds and feels great. I made the right choice. :D

You mean, you made the right choice for now!
