So...I have a CIJ Jaguar that I picked up recently for a discounted price and love it to pieces. It's super fast, has a deep, warm, and rich sound and the active is very cool.

The thing is, I've always been a MIA Jazz or P-bass guy and I notice that the Jag doesn't have the same quality bridge, tuners, and pickups, etc.

I want to have an active, go-to bass am deciding between keeping the Jag and doing some upgrades or ordering a 4-string Jazz Deluxe. Do you think the latter bass will sound different? One thing I'm curious about is the pickup spacing. The Jag is set up so you're going to get less mids (pickups closer to the neck), which I like, and I wonder how that compares to the Deluxe.

Otherwise, the Deluxe looks fantastic. I'm assuming their necks are about the same in terms of width?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Price difference isn't a huge thing to me, since I only have a couple basses.

The Jag is a great bass for the money, but as the owner of a MIA I will tell you straight up that there is no comparison in quality. The parts are better, the workmanship is better and in the long run the instrument will last longer due to its overall quality. In the end though you have to do what you can afford. My advice is figure out what you can reasonably spend and go from there. Trying to upgrade parts makes as much sense as buying a minivan and hoping with parts to pimp it up to a Ferrari - in the end you'll have an average guitar with a bunch of parts that you spent too much for individually when you could have gotten a whole new instrument for less.

I have to agree with Fretless 5. Although the Jag is a very good bass- the MIA is always going to be worth more from a money standpoint and I think the build is better. Don't worry about EQ-- the Deluxe can do it all as far as extreme bass pumping- super too much treble- and Mids that will cut thru wood like a saw. The Jag has nice capabilities also. The Jag sounds good in big boomy rooms and has tons of different tones. The active is super loud. I still have to say that if you put the two side by side almost everyone will pick the USA Jazz deluxe. This in my opinion would not be true if you were asking me about getting a 97 Jazz Deluxe-- those were not so good for a few reasons--- but Fender took care of all that and the new Jazz deluxes are nice. Gofer it.
