Your Boner Jazz Bass employs a standard vintage-style bridge; it appears the previous owner swapped the stock 3-ply white guard for a replacement tort from WD Music.

I thought it was all original!

PS: did you notice the bridge comes with three screw holes! quite unique, eh... and a bit tricky to find replacement for...

The Leo Quan Badass III is a 3 screw bridge. Discontinued but some new ones are on eBay if you search "badass III" you'll usually find one or two. I'm not a big fan and think they are way overrated and overpriced, but they are extremely stable and have a huge amount of saddle travel for intonation with about any gauge of string. The BAIII works for top loading or body through stringing. Only a competent bass technician should even attempt installation of one of them. Getting replacement saddles is impossible, so if you botch one slotting you have to buy another bridge and start over.

Also the Fender Deluxe Bass Bridge is a 3 screw bridge. Discontinued a few years ago when they went to the high mass bridge on the Deluxe models. Not sure if Fender is still shipping these but they are in most major parts channels like this shop: http://darrenriley.com/store/fender-american-deluxe-bass-bridge-0058396000/ On the plus side these have three different string slots on each saddle to address your spacing issue and work for top loading or body through stringing. The down side to them is a miniscule amount of saddle travel compared to a stock vintage bridge or to the Leo Quan.

The Hipshot Vintage that I'm familiar with is a 5 screw bridge. I would not drill holes. And it has a small amount of saddle travel like the Fender Deluxe.

Also I'm thinking those "F" capped knobs are not stock either. They look like Elite knobs maybe.

Those knobs are left overs. Some Boner Jazzes were shipped with black Stratocaster knobs while others were fitted with serrated rubber Elite types.

… I may even be surprised to see something more under the bridge and/or the electronics in the guitar…. fingers crossed not!

The guy who I bought it from is a Fender collector

I did not know that. So they could be stock knobs with the F caps? Oddball for sure.

Learn something new every day. I have never seen the flame knob on anything not put together at the Fuji-gen plant in the 80s, and never on a jazz. The knobs were made in both black and white and have value unto themselves. Blacks can sell easily for $30 each and Whites are all over, between $35 and $80. Always amazed me that they haven't been reproduced. I keep a number of white ones in stock as they work for my Performer collection, and it always seems the tone knob is missing the F on ones I buy. I have black ones on a Katana. The Heartfield DR-4 had the same, three piece, black knob on it but the cap was plain, no F.

It is odd to see them on that bass.

update fellas!

I did change the stock bridge for a gotoh. A luthier did the job and the result is pretty good.

Playability is great.

Now I'm just thinking about doing the set up myself, whenever I need it.

I do know the process, but not sure what size of allen key would I need if I would have to adjust the thrust rod, do you guys know?
Cheers,
M.

You want to adjust the truss rod not thrust rod. LOL

Which bass was yours? USA manufacture or not?

Tell that to John Mayer. He says he quite enjoys tweaking his thrust rod.

Sorry guys, English is not my native language.

I've got an exported Jazz bass made in late '89, those known as longhorn, or boner jazz.

Gracias amigos!

hi .......can someone tell me which bridge will fit my bass from the Fender web site.....I like the look of the Classic Vibe 60's bridge. it says "Can be retrofitted to most basses using a vintage-style 5-screw mounting design. Some modification may be required."
does the MIM Jazz have a vintage style 5 screw design?.....

thanks

A MIM Standard bridge uses 5 mounting screws.

ok thanks, so in theory any any Fender bridge with the 5 screw arrangement will fit another Fender with 5 screws?.....(I guess that is as obvious as it sounds, huh?) :D
