I'm wondering when Fender will give us an extended range bass we can afford. The Steve Bailey bass is cool, but a little unreasonable for most. I realize his name carries some dollars(and it should), but I'd like a standard series without his name on it. A good American 5 string is a big investment, but reasonable. I'm wondering when we get the six string equivalent. It may already be in the process and i haven't heard, or Fender may be waiting out a contract with Steve. Tell me if you've heard anything.

Well I wouldn't hold my breath. I ordered a Steve Bailey last July and still haven't seen it. Long story short is that the production date kept getting pushed back. One of the variables on that is interest in the instrument.

I love Fenders but one of the things that needs to be realized is that Fender players are generally very traditional (I count myself in that as for all of the effects I use and all of the slapping and 2 handed tapping I do underneath it all is based in James Jamerson and Anthony Jackson). Alot of the time fender has come out with designs based on improvement of the P-bass or Jazz bass or modifications that are common to those basses that don't last very long. Think of it like this since Fender is the standard that most basses are based on and most replacement parts are built to the specs of why spend $1200 to get a Fender with a heavier bridge, quieter pick ups, and active electronics when you can spend $500 on a MIM Jazz Bass then spend $150 to replace the bridge and $200 to replace the pick ups and electronics.

Anyway back to the topic. It has taken the Six a while to gain acceptance (just read a couple of interviews with Anthony Jackson to see what I mean). While Fordera, Ken Smith, Washburn, Warwick, Ibanez etc.....all jumped on relatively early Fender is new to that game trying to add to an already saturated market. I'm looking forward to getting mine but I don't think it will be on the market for very long. Let alone getting a budget model made.

Not necessarily a Fender, but this SX 6-string Ursa 2 would be a good start for an affordable MIM Standard or a higher-priced American Standard Jazz Bass VI. Tell me what do you think.

John.

@ Barak: Usually action issues are an easy fix. We'll see.

@ Chromeface: Beautiful axe. The White Pick guard seems to lighten up the sunburst finish a little.

IF you just want an affordable 6 that sounds "fenderish" without looking the part, you should consider one of the Carvins. MTD makes some affordable 5s and 6s as well, although the sound is not classically Fender. Tom Clement of http://www.clementbass.com makes "fender-looking" custom (as in from scratch) basses, and you could easily get a 6 from him for less than 2 grand.

I'm actually surprised that Fender makes a 6 at all although you have to get them credit for doing it right when they did. As good an instrument as it is, I would probably get an MTD import. You'll get better wood and features, plus for at least a $1000 less you'll get something that looks very boutique.

Even the older American Deluxe Jazzes deserve a 6-string version. Same classic six-string Jazz Bass design as the SX URSA 2 with active electronics, SCN 6-string Jazz Bass pickups, 22 frets, abalone inlays, graphite neck reinforcements, Steve Bailey's unique 6-string retainer bar and Hipshot Ultralites. Tough luck, these basses are no longer in production.

well the market is saturated with basses period 4/5 and 6,but there's bunch of players would buy a 6 string Fender Jazz for one like it or not, the Fender Jazz Bass has a tone that you just can't get around, and trust me I've gone thru a ton of other so called "great Jazz basses, and ended up selling all of them, but back to my point a lot of bass players that play 6 would buy it if it were reasonably price and played great.
What I do hear is what the op said about Steve Baileys name being on it ( no offense to Mr. Bailey) there's players who don't mind the signature and there's just as many players that doesn't want to "jock some other players name on his own bass....see there's a market right there, but like you I really doubt if Fender will make another 6 outside of the one they already have

as we use to say in the military "smoke'm if you got'em when you got'em

Isn't it Ironic that alot of guitarists will scoff at any guitar that has a "player's" name on it except a "Les Paul".

Still Waiting on the Bailey. :x

I just got the call today. The shop I got my Steve Bailey from just got it in! I'll have the last $50 at the beginning of next week but I'll at least go and visit it tomorrow. I'll also post pics soon.
