Of course we'll have to bring along our #1 Bass just so everyone else can see why we favor it so much. Playing? I don't think we'll quit talking long enough to do much else besides eat and have a few cold ones.

I think it would be great, especially the part where we abduct Brother Dave, he's probably reading this so there won't be a surprise, he'll just be paranoid,

A great majority of the time I think would be listening to his stories, he's got a bunch and has led an interesting life.

shoot, I'm pumped to have the chance to sit down with all of you.

We have to do it!

O.k., enough warm and fuzzy crap, I have to get back in character.

One thing I've found, even back in the old days on the Boston music scene was that guitarists / bands tended to get this rivalry thing going on, whereas the bassists tend to have camaraderie, even when in competing bands... I guess we're just more mature. :)

That's true...get guitarists together, and it generally becomes like the final "battle" in the movie "Crossroads" between Steve Vai and the young upstart on the tele.

How many guitarists does it take to change a lightbulb?

11 one to do it and 10 to say "I could've done it better."

I think that guitarists are so competitive because just about everybody and his brother play guitar. It makes them almost expendable. Where as in the words of Frank Zappa:

"Bass Guitar is like the Viola of Rock and Roll. When a Violin teacher has one student that doesn't play as well as the rest they take that student aside and hand them a Viola saying 'try this one it is much easier'.

"When a rock band first gets together there are usually 3 guitarists and a drummer. Then the worst guitarist of the three is handed a bass being told 'It only has 4 strings so it's easier to play."

Granted I'm the weird bassist that wasn't a guitarist first. And since the "Suburban White Boy Funk" Movement of the mid 90's (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus, 311, etc.) there have been an increasing number of players that start on bass. On top of that bass players generally have the least glamourous job in the band. That combined with the glut of guitarists and drummers gives us a sense of job security. Since we are pretty much assured of our gigs we can share our "secrets" with each other because we aren't afraid of losing our gigs like guitarists are.

Rev J

Ask and ye shall receive! Just remember the old adage, "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it!"

a bunch of thread jackers!!

anyway, this thread has become, the 1st played guitar thread...So I'll jump in - again - My parents got me a Yamaha acoustic in Jakarta, Indonesia. I took a few classes, I thought I can't do it. My dad got annoyed, cuz he thought I was just going to walk away. Of course I did after he said I was going to do it. Later in life I found out I was just like him...too late to tell him that tho :( So back to guitars...my friend has this BC Rich looking bass with a flame job. It was a Tokai. Hard shell case, nice bass from what I remember. As I just saw Steve Harris in "Live After Death" I was just enamored with what the bass can do. I kept going to my friend's house to have a chance to play the bass. Of course then I was sent by my parents to live in the US due to being such an out of control, full fledged pot dealing gang member. I was angry then, but happy to understand it better now, it was out of love and desperation to keep me alive. When I got to the US, my uncle which is a guitar player - 2 uncles, 2 guitar players, 1 uncle is a drummer - has this piece of junk $50 Hondo Pbass copy. My fascination with the bass showed up again. I bought a book to learn it - no Youtube or DVD in high quality to learn licks :p From there on, it's history! In '89 in bought my Power Jazz Bass Special, which I named Edna, after an awesome great aunt of mine. I still have her - the bass not aunt Edna.

Rev, that thought conjures up a hideous new meaning to the phrase, "buckle rash"!

Dude, I'm having "Pink Flamingos" flashbacks. BRRRRR!! Too bad the filter doesn't let the double entendre through.
