I'm going to save up. Basically, buy the body, smooth it out, deciding to go with alder...sanding, smooth sanding, stain. Put all the hardware - pups, electronics, knobs, bridge, etc on the new body...new bass - almost :D

If you already have a neck you like, that's half of the equation right there...
If you're thrilled with the hardware you already have, you're almost done. :)

If you watch like crazy, you can save big time on hardware....

I got my Badass2 (in used, but very minty condition) for just under $90,
and the new Fender "F" neckplate for about $8, and the new Genuine Fender knurled metal P-Bass knobs (Mexican) for $8.50... You can also save a lot on either genuine Fender or after market pickguards too...
Heck, I have a set of new genuine Fender (Mexican) machineheads I got for $27... I didn't end up using them though because the neck I bought already had Schallers. on it. :)

If you're all fired up to do this, go for it. If you need any help, I'm there for you! :D (And people a LOT more experienced than I am are here also!)

I'm going to part my '99 and put everything on the new body...so Fender MIM neck onto the new body. Probably 2 summers from now. Things change, this has been kinda a thought or glimmer of a dream from about 16 yrs old - 21 yrs a go - but I still think about it. Sometimes strong feelings like right now, sometimes not so strong, but it's always in the back of my head.

Like you said, the best part is you guys are here too, to help with any questions and what not :) I'm going to start saving. With not wanting a pg, that's a $35 - $65 right there depending on what I want...yet I don't want one :D So we'll start with the $35 -$65 savings. The only thing I'm assuming I'd need is the proper set up.

I have a dumb question:
It sounds like you're happy with your current bass except for the body.
Are you wanting to change it out for tonal, or aesthetic reasons? Plus, wouldn't the Warmoth body give it better tone, suppose to be better quality, or is it just a myth?

Aesthetic, the MIM body, especially from the '90s weren't the best stripped down. I've always wanted a natural, a little stain maybe, dark colored (walnut) body. Stripping the '99 won't be a good option. Plus the front routing, I would still have to use a pg which I don't want to do. I've seen '80s MIJ bodied basses stripped - 3, 2 actually looked really good, the other 1 was a shame, DIY job that went bad.

First me, then pbassbob, now you (not to mention probably scores of others before I got on here) are wanting to home brew a bass...
Next thing we know, Ox will be wanting to build his own custom 66 Slab bass.

I think at some point a lot of us that kept up playing our bass - even guitarist for that matter - have this thought about having 'our own custom' instrument that we build ourselves. That's why the Carvin build your own kit is the best selling bass/guitar they sell.

Just remember that advice is worth what you pay for it, and your mileage may vary. :P

I think I'm in good company here, between you, pbassbob, crazy Ron - eh, I mean Oxfan ;) - glbass, and my buddy the General    Oh, and of course brotherdave will chime in every now and then, which I am hononred if he did.

Hahahaha, hmm, maybe I should run for alderman in Green Bay :p

You can actually learn to do that yourself.
There's an excellent section in this book about that...
It worked for me, because I now have buttery action like I've never experienced, even compared to when I paid a tech to do a setup for me.

Cool...plus this will have a Gotoh 201 on it so it's easier (for me) to set up compared to the BadAss II or even III

And that's never bad!!

My friend has sung the praises of his Carvin kit guitar for years...
He says it's better than any American made strat style guitar costing upwards of $1,500 that he's ever played... After my experience last week, I now understand why.

It IS really cool to have all these bass resources in one place...
I've seen a few bass specific forums out there, but there is usually more noise than useful information on them... I've met some real quality people here.

Hey! You guys have been making national news for over a month now...
Maybe you should run for office! 8)

Why is the Gotoh easier? I've never had one, so please do enlighten me.

No, and the way you can present it is "adding to your profit by saving the money on paying a tech". :P

I chatted on the Carvin forum about how he's bass is 1/2 a step down from the Carvin custom jobs. He said it was way better than his American Standard J. He also own(ed) an Icon 5 string that he said was his top dog, but gigs mostly with his Carvin kit.

Sabe, we are lucky, between the people here we joke around with, even the ones less frequently, it's a pretty good group of guys. Some other forum does have more info, more pix, but for sure, less personal.

Crazy governor, but this is not the soap box forum for it...Something's gotta change for sure tho. I'm not the solution for the state tho...it'll be too much scandal then

I can never intonate my BadAss equipped basses, always a little off, the Gotoh, is just like the Fender bridge, just the HMV bridge. At least for me...I tried it...then brotherdave told me how difficult it is for rookies to adjust the Leo Quan's bridge. I took his advice and went to a tech to get the bass adjusted professionally. Never looked back. Best bucks ever spent, getting it done properly.

I hope it can go in the profit column :D

1. I WILL NOT be building a bass.

2. We do have a good bunch of guys here, I think the "others" that were here were way too advanced for us. Good Riddance.

3. There will be no disclosures about next weeks episode, all i can tell you is; There will be a twist you never saw coming.

Not at all, any available time I'll spend playing. If i were to build a bass I'd drive myself and Brother Dave nuts. Until you and Rez and Bob showed up, he was my only source.

Oh, btw, I'm flying to Philly to spend time with my uncle and his new born...so Cheesesteak establishments, here I come - and East Coast pizza joints, LOOK OUT!! I might hit the bus and head home to the City and meet up with my step mom in Midtown for some good food too...it's like an East Coast culinary adventure for me...Hahahahaha...Of course I have to bring cheese, all different cheeses, Wisc cheese, and cheese curds.

I will guarantee one thing....after a sack of those, you WILL find out who your friends really are....ask anyone who's indulged in one!

I will be getting food I can't get over here...by over here I meant not a replica of food in the east coast...like crappy pizza, chinese food, italian food...The pizzas here, horrible, Chinese food, bland. Italian food, how do they call this Italian food?! Of course making pitstop @ mom's and gramma's for the old family favorites :D
When we talk burgers, can't beat 'America's Dairyland's' burgers, cheeses, milkshakes, ice cream - frozen custard. But the others, I have to go home to get it :( Oh, NYC hotdogs...yeah, yeah, Chicago have hotdogs....but it's not NY hotdogs, kosher style snappy dogs...mmmmmm. And while in the City, I'm gonna hit some bodega or deli to get my Jamaican beef patties. Pastrami sandwich from the deli. You know, all the things I took for granted living in the City. In Philly, for sure we're hitting the cheesesteak joint(s)

Work was work, never a dull moment. Have a great time in Philly and new York, I know you will.

Yeah, Brother dave is the man. I don't know of anyone who gives more of himself. When the day comes that all the good he gives out returns, he's going to be doing real well.

We've got a good group, I feel fortunate to have hooked up with all three of you.

White Castle's are better than Exlax if that's what you need'

Up here in RI, there are hot dog joints that call themselves a "New York System"...while their fare isn't the worst I've ever tried, trust me when I tell you, these concoctions have NEVER been served on the Boardwalk (that would be Nathan's of Coney Island for those who've never had the pleasure firsthand).
Nathan's...man, I just had a craving for this awesome cream soda they used to serve...it wasn't colored as most are, clear as water, but boy did it taste GOOD!

I do like Nathan's....but my fave hotdogs are those Sabretts hotdogs, with the umbrella in the corner of the street all over the City now...man, hotdog, w/onion sauce and ketchup, a can of root beer....heaven...or Gray's...in Coney Island, have to pay respect to the original Nathan's tho :D

While you're at White Castle say hi to Harold and Kumar, and don't give Neil Patrick Harris a ride.
