I am interested in purchasing a new bass. I have been very impressed with the Squier Modifed Jazz Bass with the Duncan pick ups and was going to purchase. However, a friend of mine has now offered to sell me his used 4 year old MIM Jazz bass for $200. I can only purchase one or the other. I would actually be getting the MIM Jazz bass for about $50 less then the Squier. He mentioned to me that the Jazz bass has a ding in the back about the size of a pencil eraser in which the paint is chipped. His offer is qute tempting. Any reason I should not purchase the used MIM over the Squier Modified?

I have both, I like both. For the money, the MIM is a great deal, my number one rule,

Play them both as many times as you can. That extra $59 might be the best money you ever spent, you might find a dream bass at a bargain,

If you can get it under 2 bills, get the MIM. But if the VM sounds better to you, get the VM. Try out both. I like my VM a lot. I haven't played her for awhile, and last night I played her...wow, I sure miss her. My MIM is lots older, and my VM is better in build and quality. My MIM is a '99 tho. The newer MIM is better obviously, progress, thank goodness :)

The ebonol doesn't resonate like wood, it works well with active pups tho from what I understand. I had a 5 stringer with ebonol fretboard, it worked great for me, just too heavy :x

Given the choice, I'd use rosewood or maple board - ebony is the top choice but Fender doesn't offer it :(

I find that the pickups in the squier sound better than the fenders, but the body and neck of the Fender is probably slightly better.

Holy smokes, what's going on Anubis?? Where have you been?
My VM is flawless, better quality compared to the MIM. Stock pup is definitely better than my stock '99 too.

My $.02, since this is the FENDER Jazz forum & not the Squier forum I'd go with the MIM. Here's why: The MIM Jazz & most Fender parts interchange with virtually zero problems, so you can start with a used MIM and save your pennies while you decide on what upgrades you might like as far as p-ups, etc. I gig with a MIM P that has the 62RI, p-up, CTS pots, etc. and to my ears sounds slightly better than my MIA P. I recently picked up a used black MIM(fretless) Jazz to put together with a maple(fretted) P neck so I can have the best of both worlds(for me). It's cheap enough to be affordable and yet not so nice that I'm afraid to take it into bars, etc. After a pickup swap, it should sound every bit as good as it's USA-made cousins.

Good points. Only thing, availability of a decent used MIM and the patience of waiting for enough cash. Most Squiers are in th $300 range. Newbies need an amp and cables and all the other goodies.

I have a VM Jazz and like it. After buying a MIM Jazz recently, not quite as much as I did before. It's still a good back-up.

It's interchangeable with Squiers too.

Squier is a Fender product, so comparing the two in a "Fender" forum is not sacrilegious. Actually, a lot of us that have Fender basses have Squier bass(es) too and are quite fond of our Squier. We're all fans of Fender but some realize that the Squier VM and CV have a great quality for the money and until about last year, has a better fit and finish than the Fender MIMs.

Well maybe.... My first bass was a Squier P that I hated the neck on, so I swapped it for a MIM. The neck pocket on the Squier body was wide and the bolt holes did not line up, so the neck heel had to be doweled and re-drilled. The fender pickguard also didn't quite match and new holes had to be drilled for it as well. F-fwd a few years and now I have a "frankenstein" that still doesn't match the playability or tone of the MIM I replaced it with, so it sits and collects dust while I gig with the MIM. The money spent on the Squier would easily have bought me another MIM. Food for thought.......

Low tolerances on the older Squier, excluding the Squier II MIJs. Fender Jazz pickguards have to made to work, if you get a Fender pickguard, let alone a Squier one. Honestly, the Affinaty Squiers are not on par with MIM, but the VM and CV are above and beyond the quality of the MIM - up to 2010 when Fender realized that the MIM needs to be better especially compared to it's own cousin the lowly Squier. Just like in the '80s, how the MIJ quality was so good and the MIA weren't so great. I'm not telling you to buy a Squier and be a fan of it. But to paint all Squiers like your old P Squier is unfair.

The quality question is a tough one. Both MIM standards and Squiers are pretty inconsistent in terms of standards. A "good" VM is almost certainly better quality than a "bad" MIM, but I think in general you'll find the MIMs tend to be "better."

Don't get me wrong: I've been extremely impressed by the squier VM and classic vibe basses. They have nice pickups, and nice feeling necks, and give you far more bang for your buck than a MIM standard. However, the MIM is probably a better platform for upgrades, and it's available for a third of it's regular price.

It's a tough call, and I think it really comes down to which bass feels better in hand.

I've seen post about trying out different VM's and CV's find the best. I've found the VM's pretty good across the board - consistent. Same with the CV. The lower ones are the ones you really have to watch. A month a go I tried out the VM P Amber, flawless. I mean I'm still jonesing for a Hwy 1 P in Honey Blonde, if I get too impatient maybe I'll end up with the VM P - but I like the rosewood sound better.
