I bought my JB from an authorised Fender dealer sometimes during 1978-1979. Later, I have been wondering why it does not seem to have any serial number anywhere. Any ideas for the reason?

Thanks for your reply and suggestion. Unfortunately, I have no detailed pics available at the very moment. However, it's exactly identical to the one on
http://www.warpdrivemusic.com/vintage/7631159.Main.jpg

Replacement neck is a good candidate for an explanation, it was a second hand istrument alright but in rather pristine condition. Then again, it was not very common here (in Finland) in the 70's to replace real Fender necks just like that but try desperately to repair the original (unless it was completely mashed in an accident, perhaps).

I was just wondering whether there might have been a gap in serial numbering in 75-76. It says in several net pages that the three bolt (micro-tilt...) neck attacment appeared in mid 75. I have that in my JB and therefore obviously no serial on the neck plate. Some pages then say that the serial is on the peghead from mid 76 onwards. Thus, there seems to be a potential time-window for a gap. Might there have been a period when they already used the three bolt neck attacment routine in the body but they still stocked some necks without serial in the peghead "sticker" and simply bolted those together.

I wonder if anybody can verify or controvert my hypothesis.

The issue has no real importance to me (I'm not planning to sell my JB ever) but it would be nice to date the instrument a little bit more precisely than just sometimes between mid 75 and 79 (or was it end of 78) when I bought it.

But only just now I learned that there are three bolt neck plates with serial, which I have not realised before, e.g.
http://www.jimlawrence.net/JAZZBASS1975/jazz75.html

Still, a (76?) three bolt neck plate with no serial and an old type (75?) neck with no serial...lets bolt the together, eh?

One more detail. The peghead logo looks exactly like in this one on

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v461/ ... 060527.jpg

Thus, larger font on "JAZZ BASS" compared to the ones with the serial (late 1976?)

So, 1976 at the latest for the neck anyway?
