Hi. I have yet another question about the MIM jazz basses. I'd like to change the current pickups of my own bass for a higher quality, hum-cancelling pups in the near future.

The hum is not awful but for the most part it is noticeable (probably stronger than other jazz basses I've tried at stores) and I'd like to play around with the pickup volume knobs for more tone variety without thinking about the hum. So far, I've only played the bass with both volume knobs at the same level, and I only screw around with the tone knob. That doesn't give me a lot of variety (unless I also screw around with my modest amp, which doesn't have all that many options either).

So any suggestions of hum-cancelling pups you have tried and, if possible, an estimated price for each? Would I have to change both to actually cancel the humming, or just one would suffice for a while (to make the hum less noticeable at least)?

Thanks in advance!

Jchoi, which multi fx pedal you use? Is it expensive? If so, have you tried some not that expensive that are good? I've heard about noise gates and didn't give them much thought, but now I am thinking they could be a great way to lower the hum and the finger noises when the EQ is set trebly, or with distortion.

Good question. I'd like to know that too.

Carlos, is the hum that bad? My VM has a hum but nothing that's bothersome. Neither basses w/the active pups I have any hum, quiet like a church mouse :)

All a noise gate is is a level dependent mute. You set a threshold on the gate any time the signal goes below that level the gate shuts. The problem is the noise will still come back when you are playing. I've heard they are great for stacatto metal guitar riffs. I know they are good for controlling snare bleed on kick drum tracks. I wouldn't use it to try to get rid of hum.

It's not that bad, but I can still notice it. Maybe that's because I've have had mostly guitars with humbuckers, so maybe I'm not used to the humming. I just got a new bass with humbuckers, and it is completely silent when not played.

Interesting, thanks for sharing that. So I guess my best bet is still to get the noiseless pups.

Well, first thing is: it's not a Fender. It's a Yamaha RBX375, and I bought it because I wanted to have another bass with a different tone, but also I wanted a five string to start learning how to play it early on. Should I post pics of non-Fender basses here?

Second, I have one in black for now, but since it is a bit battered and probably was hanging around the store for quite a while (probably abused somewhat too), I will get a brand new one, in a silver finish. I love black, it's beautiful, but I love the silver one even more. Whenever I get the new one I will upload a few pics.

Shoot, why not. Others have done it. I don't have anything but Fender products anymore, but if I have one I'd show it off.
