I know these threads have been flooged to death already, but I want some advice on replacement p-ups for a MIM Jazz. I recently picked up an 03 MIM Jazz(fretless) cheap so I could swap the neck for a maple Allparts P neck. I want to upgrade the p-ups as well but wodering what would be better. My top picks so far are the Original Re-issue Fender and the 60's Custom Shop pickups. Are the p-ups used in the Geddy basses the Original RI? I'm looking for a late 60's/early 70's tone, I also have a MIM P that I have the 62RI p-up in and I will be using both these basses in a live/giging situation. I don't like really hot, bright sounding p-ups either. Thanks!

I've used both pickups in my jazz bass as replacements for my 2008 Am. Standard Jazz. Although both have a lot of midrange, the original vintage have far more high mids and the custom 60's have less high mids and more low mids. I happen to prefer the original vintage, because they have a really rich singing quality in the high mids that isn't too nasily. That being said, the customs sound great as well. The custom 60's sound more like the mexican vintage pickups found in the the highway one, classic basses, and american special. Also, the original vintage pickups are in the Geddy Lee bass (as well as the 62 RI and most custom shop jazz basses).

Sound Examples:

At about 5:00 he plays his custom 64 jazz, which has the original vintage pickups. I think it sounds freakin great.

Next up is the 62 jazz compared to the American Special. The 62 jazz has the original vintage pickups, and the american special has standard vintage pickups, which sound a lot like the custom 60s.

Hope this helps. I had the same issue when I was choosing pickups a few years ago. I went with the custom pickups, but switched to the original vintage about a year later.

Click on the title below each link to view them.

i.e. Fender American Vintage 62 Jazz Bass RW 3SB EXP

Even though I own the American Special and love the tone I think the 62's are better (at least in these videos)

Remember,Its OK to get a reference point to start but every bass sounds different, every player makes the bass sound different, different strings change the tone so add that to the last things I just listed, the amp sounds different than others and may be a tube amp or other..? the wood used is organic and even the same model bass with the same model pick-ups with the same exact bridge and hardware AND strings will sound different.
Well my point being try to hear these differences yourself in person,be the judge on how they sound yourself because only you know what makes a bass sound great and ideal for your purposes, your style and playing is the greatest variable to be considered, only you can decide what tone is truly "GREAT",no-one can tell that better than you.
Goodluck, play as many as possible and go from there;cause it's all on you

Well guess what? I've had this bass together for a couple of months now and still have the stock p-ups in it! I dunno if it was because the new neck is a bit beefier or the added mass of the NOS Schaller tuners, but this thing really came to life. Maybe since I'm mainly a P guy I prefer a bit fatter tone, but with the neck p-up only it reminds me of an early single-coil Precision. Whatever the reason I really love this bass and have been using it for most of my live gigs & rehearsals!
