ok, I have seen the pics of all kinds of jazz basses and any other fender bass, and this has always bothered me. if you get a thumb rest, theoretically it should be on the top above the pick ups, but any time i see pics of them, there always below the strings, and im trying to figure out why ?

This is not my explanation, I got this from a post on another website. I hope that it helps makes sense now.

"Back in the '50s when Leo Fender designed his precision bass, he had the idea that players would play his new invention with their thumb. He therefore put a fingerrest, or finger anchor, under the g-string.
Remember Leo had the upright bass tone and the upright player in mind.

Now - allthough his design, the precision bass, was "spot on" in many ways, players very soon found that playing with the index finger (and/or other fingers) was better - the fingerrest had no longer any purpose. Still, Fender basses through the '60 are equipped with this plastic thing. Players usually removed it. In the '70, Fender moved the fingerrest to a position above the e-string, now called a thumbrest, allthough it was the same black plastic thing. Players rest their thumb on the pup, OR on the thumbrest for a fuller, more "necky" tone. Most players, I believe, removed it even then."
