Most of the bass players today would need to take a handful of Valium if you even suggested they play further north than the fifth fret. Has there ever been a duller period for mainstream pop / rock bass playing than that we are going through at present? All the major stadia bands boast not one bass player or track that sounds like the bass player has progressed past root / fifth back to root. And the bass in the mix is getting ever fainter, buried beneath kick drum / detuned guitar sludge.

To answer your question (!) they could mass produce basses with 10 frets and it would be five too many for most players!

Rant over.

Yeah, I feel you, man. Right now I don't really mind to learn songs that stick to the root notes, but that's only because I'm not that advanced to play harder basslines. Granted, though, I am learning a few songs who I might consider hard, and very fun to play because they're original: Aqualung (Jethro Tull), Hyena (Rancid), and for non-rock songs, The Chicken (Weather Report).

It's probably true what you say about "bassists" who only play the basics. I guess it has to do with the modern notion of instant gratification as some of those root-note bassists are dragged along a popular band, without going beyond what they "have" to do as bassists; they get fortune, fame and chicks without properly becoming musicians. But there is a good thing in that, and it's that those bassists who do not only stick with the root notes and fifths will be considered more talented, and less common. Both are good traits, IMHO, to get more gigs.

By all means, rant if you must, most of us aree good at that. All of my basses have 20 frets but, I've often wished for 22 or 24.

Your views were very good and pretty much stated where today's music is, have a pint for me. :D

There weren't 22-fret Fender basses available until 1989.

The first, but unofficial 22-fret Fender bass was the MIJ Elite P-Bass of 1984. It lasted only 2 years then discontinued in 1986.

So how did PowerJazz get a hold of an '87 Fender 22 fretter, I wonder?

I'm a 24 fret guy. Granted I grew up on Shred and Fusion. Granted I'm also a six string bass guy. I guess that makes me even more of a rarity on this site. In a couple of weeks I should have my new Fender Steve Bailey. I always said that if Fender made a 6 string Jazz bass with 24 frets I would get one.

Nice. It must be pretty fun to hear you play, then. Very versatile. Personally, I'm not sure if I'll ever venture into the 6-stringed basses, but so far I have a 5-stringed one, so that's a little progress.

That bass looks awesome, by the way! Pro-gear all the way.

I'm starting to think Sam Ash lied to me, they told me it's been sitting there since '87, got the paper order form. I bought it Christmas '89...I did play with it a few times before then...visited my uncle that lived in Edison, NJ at the time for Halloween weekend, then Thanksgiving, and a few weekends in between - I was close, still am, with him. Then Christmas holiday I decided to bite the bullet, that's when the sales person showed me the 'order form' from sam ash to fender....wonder if he lied huh? my elusive '87 might be an '89 after all??

Well, I'm no expert, but it would indeed appear that the sales guy did lie you somewhat about the year. But two years difference isn't a lot... or is it?

Look it on a positive light: it's still considered a vintage bass, right? Have you posted pics of it, by any chance? I'd like to have a look at your "baby".

Only rock? Man, if there is an epic music genre, is rock ;)! He he he, I'm very partial towards it, but I grew with rock, it is in my veins so to speak.

that's a good way of looking at it. Here she is with the VM - btw the '89 has all black knurled knobs now:

Wow, beautiful basses, PJB! But which one is which? Sorry, I'm still relatively new to the whole Jazz Bass family thing.
