I recently bought a 24 Fret Jazz, one of the discontinued Korean made models and I have found it hard to find much info online about them, probably because tehy are discontinued. So anything anyone knows about them, let me know :)

Also specifically I'd like to ask how you are meant to tell which way the batterey is meant to go in when it needs changing?

And I get buzz when I'm not playing anything (open strings not being plucked) when it's in active mode and the volume is around 75%-100%

Apart from those 2 minor problems it's a lovely bass, and I love it.

Thanks.

Doesn't the battery only goes in 1 way? the smaller post 1st, if you try the other way it won't go in. I used to get buzz in my '87 too when I had it new when it's wide open, usually when the battery is running low, or a bad cord. When I switched to EMG, no buzzing, noise, just volume. My '87 battery case I just take out the battery and disconnect to the pad, no way to put it wrong, cuz the post have to match to the pad. Same with my '99.

Well that's what I thought but while looking around on the internet for more info on my bass I found alto of people complaining that you couldn't tell which way to put the battery in and they put it in the wrong way and it fryed tehir pre-amp.

So either they are really stupid or there is a subtle difference (that I havn't notcied) with the battery compartments of the korean made Fender 24 fret jazzes which makes it so you can put in the battery the wrong way round.

Also I wanted any general info there is about the bass if anyone knows anything.

I've started a thread at Talkbass to see what I can find. So far, no luck.

They have a review on there already, have you tried the search on talk bass? This is the review I'm talking about: http://www.talkbass.com/reviews/showpro ... 677/cat/13

Yes, that one I saw, but the specs on the 4 string and 5 string are not the same. They didn't jam 5 strings into the space of 4. The whole neck is considerably wider and things like the pups are different of course too.

Anyway, thanks for the help. In response to my TB post someone found this review which has the details I needed to confirm.

I just thought of throwing bit of info for anyone curious about 24-fretted Fenders. I just learned there was a rather interesting-looking one called "Performer" back in '85, but it only lasted one year (or less) in production.

Image

It looked pretty neat, sort of metal-ish or hard rock-ish, maybe Fender should think of re-issuing it (but then again, the P's and J's are too popular to admit a not-so-popular third "brother"). By the way, who here thinks a 24-fret bass would be advantageous to have? Or maybe it's a waste of wood?

a lot of the competitor has 24 frets. As bass players we don't usually venture to the high end of the notes, except maybe for solos/showing off right ;) So not really advantageous for us. Some people like having the 24 frets, nice to know it's there if you need it. I'm fine playing the the lower end of the neck to the middle. I've had basses with 24 frets, it's cool. All my SoundGear were 24 frets, BTB were 24, Stu Hamm was a 24. As a matter of fact my '87 is a 22 fretter 8)

Hmmm, I see. Good to know. My new addition, the Yamaha, has 24 frets, but I didn't buy it for that, just noticed after-the-fact. Probably won't use that part much. I like the low growl of the first octave, especially with an uber-low B string. Bit twangy, though, but good enough for what I paid.

Why is your 87' a 22 fretter? Is it common for basses of that year? My "Nessie" has only 20, but I guess that's the common thing among Jazz Basses, right?

There weren't 22-fret Fender basses available until 1989.

The first, but unofficial 22-fret Fender bass was the MIJ Elite P-Bass of 1984. It lasted only 2 years then discontinued in 1986.

..... By the way, who here thinks a 24-fret bass would be advantageous to have? Or maybe it's a waste of wood?[/quote]

Most of the bass players today would need to take a handful of Valium if you even suggested they play further north than the fifth fret. Has there ever been a duller period for mainstream pop / rock bass playing than that we are going through at present? All the major stadia bands boast not one bass player or track that sounds like the bass player has progressed past root / fifth back to root. And the bass in the mix is getting ever fainter, buried beneath kick drum / detuned guitar sludge.

To answer your question (!) they could mass produce basses with 10 frets and it would be five too many for most players!

Rant over.

I'm a 24 fret guy. Granted I grew up on Shred and Fusion. Granted I'm also a six string bass guy. I guess that makes me even more of a rarity on this site. In a couple of weeks I should have my new Fender Steve Bailey. I always said that if Fender made a 6 string Jazz bass with 24 frets I would get one.

Rev J
