Hello, I'm new to the forum and just browsing through the stack of posts here, have learned that my new bass may have a few quirks to it. A friend of mine bought a 2007 MIM bass with MEC dynamic correction pickups and after playing it for myself, immediately planned to switch out my Fender P for a J bass of my own. I bought a MIM 2003 and after a side by side comparison of pickups, the stock ones clearly lacked the confidence of sound coming from the MECs. At this point i'm unsure of what i am limited to if, say i don't want to bore into my guitar to make room for a new pickup in the bridge. Is that pickup issue limited only to the 90's models? Are those the same models with the pickguard size issue as well or for all MIM models?
Seeing how a big part of what i liked about that jazz bass were the MEC pickups and unless i want to order them from germany, they are a bit harder to get ahold of. Anyone have any suggestions for something comparable? They come stock in some Warwicks and in the forums there, said EMGs were comprable if not better. I'm looking to stay with the passive option at this point. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Are you saying you played a Mexican Fender Jazz with MEC Humbuckers in it? And are you saying that the MEC pickup was in the bridge of the guitar? I'm kind of confused that maybe the guitar you are talking about with MEC pickups is not really a Jazz. Is it a Humbucking pickup? I guess it wouldn't suprise me if a Jazz had Warwick style Humbuckers in it. It might sound good. I wonder why Fender has never done that or---maybe they have. I just can't keep up with the hundreds of changes all the time.

These are the pickups installed in my buddy's Jazz bass. Both the neck and brige pickup which are single coil (2nd down).

Okay- those are Jazz pickups and should fit right into a Fender Jazz bridge position without boring or routeing. I've had to route only on Fernandes Jazz bodied basses to fit regular Fender pick- ups-- I had a Warwick and I believe it had the MEC pickups in it. They were the large looking humbuckers. I didn't like the sound of the bass and didn't want to spend hundreds on it- so it's gone. I guess that's info you really don't need.

Warwick doesn't only use MECs. They also offer some of their Limited and Special Edition basses with Seymour Duncan Basslines and Bartolini pickups/electronics.
