Which is better for rock sound?

Personally I'd go with the HW1 everytime.

Mainly because I don't really like signature guitars, but mostly because the HW1 is a simple, well built and fantastic sounding bass that will allow you to do everything. I'm sure the Reg Hamilton bass is great, but in my mind there's no question.

Highway 1s are good value, just not quite as well finished - they keep the price down by doing less coats of lacquer

I would chose the Highway One, as I own a Hwy One P-bass and am very happy with it. Ultimately the choice is yours so spend time feeling out each instrument and choose the one you feel is better suited for your needs. Can't go wrong with either though.

depends what you care about most. If you want a bass that will hold its value more in the future(assuming you keep it stock and in good condition) than go with the Hway 1 bass since its US made. If you care more about more tonal options than go with the Reggie Hamilton Mexico made one--the one's I've seen and played are good quality fit, finish, workmanship and EXCELLENT sound and tonal variety since they use the US pickups. NOTE: if you have lots of dough to spend then get the US made Custom Shop Reggie Hamilton 4 or 5 string bass which costs $2400-2600 since this will both appreciate in value and also sound great.

Have you tried the Geddy Lee? For the price you can't beat it. I don't own one but I have played around with them in guitar shops and they are amazing basses. A buddy of mine plays one and his sound really good. They play a lot of Rock and 80's stuff, and his tone is perfect for that.
