I haven't realized it until now, but the frets of my MIM Jazz Bass seem to be slightly longer than the width of the neck where they're positioned, protruding a bit. It doesn't affect playability at all, but I was wondering if this happens often on MIM Jazz basses, or is it just mine? Or is it a feature of Jazz Basses or even Fender basses in general?

How can you do it without damaging the finish of the neck? Sorry, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to minor guitar repairs of that kind.

I would get to know the local scene...find out what shop has what. Go to the person the most people in your area would go to. Leave it to the pros if you don't know how to do it. That's what I do.

None of my American guitars have ever shrunk. Maybe it's wet enough here. However-- in the late 90's just about every Mex bass I touched had the fret thing going on. I even would slice the side of my fingers on them. Okay so in Mexico it's real dry I guess and that could be it. I used to just think the people filing the frets weren't real good at it.
Pbassbob- please don't get mad at me. I'm not saying you don't know squat.
I believe the shrink thing but I think it's rare. How rare I don't know. I do know I've had some of my guitars all over the US in all kinds of weather since the 70's and had not experianced the shrink in any guitars untill I investigated Mexican basses in the late 90's. I've had 90 some guitars. Some of the first Roadworns were hideous with sharp fret ends and I'm thinking the shrink may have got to them. Just wondering what's up with Mexico? My 09 Roadworn bass has the smooth fret ends to the max. I guess that's what makes me think sharp ends may have something to do with the guy fileing frets at the Factory. I would think that a neck tech would know about fret ends being sharp and would take measures to avoid it no matter what the weather. Call me crazy- just thinking too much maybe.

Okay I can understand the South England thing and the maple neck also. Maybe flying the guitars over in a cargo hold on a jet may have something to do with it also--- being as the wood is not seasoned. Just thinking again.

I have never done anything to prevent shrinkage, but my 2001 American Jazz and 2005 Standard MIM Strat have never felt any different. OTOH, my '98 Squier MIM Strat has had gnarly fret ends from day one (nothing to do with humidity). It gets humid in SC, but my gear is inside all the time, for the most part. We use natural gas heat in the winter (very dry) and AC in the summer (can't live without my AC down here).

So, why have my frets ends never begun to stick out?

Sorry for the late reply. I've asked at the store where I bought my Jazz Bass and they told me they would file the frets for me, at no cost. So that's good.

As for the shrinkage, I'm not sure about it, I haven't had this bass for long and when I bought it, maybe I didn't notice the frets because frankly they do not get in the way (I haven't been slashed with them or anything).

Still, I want the neck of my bass to be smooth as silk, je je je. Personal preference.
