I really dig the look of the new Jazz fives with the blocks and binding, so much so that I'm tempted to buy one this year. But knowing I'd only play it in passive mode, I'm thinking I need something other than mere looks to justify the extra cash for a Deluxe. So I'm wondering if there is anything else about the Deluxe I should consider?

I thought you were done spending money on basses about 2 yrs a go MM

I think, since you're only going to play it in passive, it shouldn't matter. If you enjoy the looks of it, go for it. I used to play my '87 in active only, so when I got the EMG's I took out the passive capability. It is a nice bass to look at. BTW, are you buying a 5 in Am Std too? If no, then it's apples and plums...since the 4 strings would be apples and oranges (active v. passive bass) :)

Everytime I think I'm done buying basses I see something cool ... and then it's only a matter of time!

I've got an American Standard P-bass fiver, and wasn't all that tempted to get a Jazz fiver until the Deluxe models came out last year. I blame the blocks and binding -- it's what got me looking again. I noodled with one at the NAMM show in January (sans amplification) but haven't had a chance to really play one yet. None of the local music store can keep them in stock. So I figured I'd ask here whether anyone has had much experience with one.

That's what gets me, even though I love the modern sound (active pups) I also love the old look - classy binding and blocks :) I think if you have the Am Std 5 already...just for the looks, you gotta make that decision yourself - if I have the money, I'd be buying one already. I'm the wrong guy to ask I suppose. Sorry for not really being helpful MM.
