I got a new 60's Jazz Bass back in Nov which I have been enjoying immensely. At band practice yesterday the first time I touched the G string before I had played a note there was a loud snapping sound from the amp. I touched it a few more times and got the same sound only quieter until it eventually stopped. I turned everything off and started over and the same thing happened. It doesn't happen when I am playing, just if I haven't played for a few minutes and just on that string. Any ideas? The guitar player said something about shielding but wouldn't that affect every string?

have you tryed to plug the bass in another amp, so you can see if the problem is in the bass or in the amp. I think that it can be the amp, who has a problem with the high notes  but I havent seen the bass or the amp :o ohh you can take a look at your brige to.

Good idea. I'll go to the studio (read: "garage") now and try it on my other amp. I'll also plug my older bass into the same amp and try to isolate it that way as well.

Duh, it's static electricity. I have some very nice oriental rugs on the floor of the garage to give it some studio ambiance and help the sound a little and when I checked just now I didn't turn on the light and just walked up to it, turned on the amp and touched the string and saw and felt the charge and heard the same noise. Walked around some more and got it to pop on each string. Problem solved. It's dry here in Colorado. Go figure. Other bass did same thing on other amp.
