hi i have bought a brand new geddy lee bass - jazz of course. It cost me £800 so im assuming for that money its a reliable bass to own?

My ownly gripe about this bass is it is very quiet i would like a bit more energy in my sound.

What kind of pick ups could I get? I am a rock bassist i like bands like kasabian, oasis, beatles , led zep and the who..so i want something that will give me versatility in my sound

Will pick ups improve the sound of this bass? if so ..what kind? ive heard Bareknuckle pickups are good?

I know it's annoying when people respond to your post without directly answering your question but can I suggest one idea?

Rather than splashing out on new pickups and the hassle of installing them, have you considered a DI box such as the Tech21 Sansamp Bass Driver series? You can use this to boost the output level of your bass (and I admit, the Geddy Lee pickups are noticeably quieter than my MIM 70s Classic Jazz) and get a whole stack of tone shaping options, valve-like warmth and grit as well.

Just a thought.

I can't suggest a brand, since I'm partial to EMG's. They just fit the music I play.
What kind of amp do you play thru? I've been seeing a few of these threads come up about the GL has low volume output. The previous poster suggested a DI - I have heard the DI does increased volume. Now If a bass I'm playing is low in volume output, I would just turn up my amp. I usually put the volume right under 1 if I'm by myself. At band practice I turn up to 2. Check out sound clips on the internet on different pickups for basses, it might give you a better answer on what kind of pickups you might want to get to replace the originals you have on your GL. Good luck!

i second the DI driver as an option... i find with my GL that at many clubs the house rig amps are not a good match and the signal is very low... so i use a line driver... with my Mesa rig i dont need it as the Mesa gives me loads of oomph....

why buy a signature series instrument developed to give you a certain sound, and then start swapping out components? better to just buy a stock J and throw on a BAII bridge and do what you want with the pups....

I've had two Geddy Lee basses. I like the look and feel of G Lee basses.I put Dimarzio pickups in them . I had an 04 that just sounded thin and didn't have the gut sound. I got a 98 first year Geddy a couple weeks ago and it sounded pretty weak like you discribe. So I put Dimarzios in it. Not the silent no buzz ones- I don't like those. I think they are weak too. Well Dimarzios helped my 98 alot but it still didn't have the honk. I decided to get rid of the badass 2 bridge. I installed a stock Fender bridge like the kind you would find on a 72 J bass. That did the trick! The sound opened up , it sustained better and overall sound is very balanced. I recorded with it the other night and noticed the improvement even more. The pickups and regular bridge work for me.
IMO installing a pickup(s) is not a problem. I adjust the poles for neck radius. It's all good now.
Players seem to be real particular about their equiptment. Sometimes if you don't agree with them about this or that they take offense and get mad and think you are an idiot. I'm not like that. If you don't like what I like it's okay. If a person thinks a Badass bridge is the best thing since vanilla ice cream that's fine with me. I however think they suck tone in 95% of what I've heard. I actually have a custom guitar that has a badass and it just sounds great--- that's the other 5%.

Hi Raindance.. I found my GL J-Bass weak sounding too, so here is what i did to help it sound better. I raised the pickups so they are closer to the strings, both neck and bridge position pickups. I kept the bass pluged in so I could here how it affected the sound, after every adjustment, and adjusted the pickups until I was happier with the sound.

A good amp is also key to your sound, so make sure you have good wattage behind you to drive your sound.

I love the sound from my stock Geddy Lee Jazz!
