Have been to that site and it dates it as a 1985 Corona by the serial #
Which is more important serial # or neck date.

That I wouldn't know. You can look up threads that brotherdave answered...you look down on his sig, there is a link...he's on here everyday but might not reply to specific threads. What you can do is email him from the link, he'll reply to you right away. The man is the professor here.

I've heard they make necks and have so many that they just keep using them past the year they were made. Alot of mfg companies of all types do that.

The Guitar Dater project is wrong on that one. It really isn't their fault either. The "V" serials are almost RANDOM over the entire Fullerton run.

I really think that is a U.S. Vintage Series Reissue, commonly referred to as a "Fullerton Era Reissue," and it was made at Fullerton, CA. From 1982 until 1984 (and I've heard a few even shipped in early 1985) Fender's Fullerton plant went out with the greatest triumph of the CBS era when they turned out some amazingly accurate reproductions of the pre-CBS era Fender instruments called the U.S. Vintage Series. This neck date clearly falls into the Fullerton era. I've seen instruments with a higher serial than this considered to be 1982 Fullerton.

There were "V" serials out of Corona too and these are commonly called "Corona Era Reissues." But the neck date you have definitely says Fullerton era and I'd go by the neck date before the serial on Vintage Series Reissues from either place.

Fender regular production serials are usually VERY reliable, but not so with the Fullerton Era or Corona Era Reissues that start with "V." These "V" serials, especially the Fullerton Era ones, are all jumbled. So it is best to go by the neck date. Necks can take weeks to get mated to a body, not months or in this case years.

It seems implausible to me that a neck made in Fullerton in '83, which this neck certainly was, would be transported to Corona for assembly two years later. It could have happened, but I very seriously doubt anything like that went on. I'm over 99% sure that is a 1983 Fullerton Era Vintage Series Reissue and I'd say there is next to no chance that it is Corona Era because of the neck date. I'd check the pot date code too. They were running pretty lean so the pot date codes would be very close to the neck date.
