Hi. I'm relatively new to bass playing, but I'm hooked now so much I have called myself a bassist since I started.

But now I'm "officially" a bassist with my new Jazz Bass, Mexican-made. I love it. It's gorgeous, sounds awesome and was a good price ($600 compared to the +$800 it was worth originally).

I just have a question. I can't find much info about the year, not even in this website. The serial number is MZ9507085. I was wondering if anyone knows about this one. I guess it's probably made in the last year or so.

Thanks.

P.S. I can't upload photos because my digital camera is broken. But it's a Fender Jazz Bass Standard, "placid lake" blue or something like that. I got it from a big music store in my city.

Hey; Welcome to Fender Land. It's a MIM, MZ9 (2009-2010). Some times the year stamp on the neck carries over to the next year. If you have you head tag that may have come with the bass, it has a product number on it. That has more info than the serial number. If not, go into the Products section, Jazz Basses, Standards, find your bass and it will give you the info. what finish and fretboard did you get? Post pics when you can.

Hey. Thanks for the welcoming, and for the info on my Jazz Bass. I am glad I have this bass, plays beautifully and sounds great, plus it looks gorgeous.

Unfortunately no, I don't have the tag with me, only the serial number. But it's good to know the year for starters.

I'm not sure about the finish/ fretboard, but I think the latter is maple, not tinted (the way I like it).

Hello. I borrowed a camera and I could now upload pics of my Jazz Bass. My signature has one now, and I uploaded in another thread specially for pics.

Nice- The Mex basses are getting better all the time. I love my 50's classic and my Roadworn. I wouldn't have said that awhile back. Once they got away from the basswood-- (but I'm not sure that they don't use it anymore) to me they started sounding better. Sorry-- don't like the basswood too much. Alder or Ash is good, even Poplar.

I can't agree with you more on that Vance. My '99 feels like a lightweight bass, the new MIM on the other hand, nice, weighty, nice controls, feels solid. Mine's all modified, I got it to do what I want to it. For $175 I can't complain - got it 2 summers a go. My Squiers feels centuries better than the '99, but it has almost 2 decades of progress - thank goodness :)

I don't know what it is but some light basses don't quite have the sound in the wood and some do. My Roadworn is pretty light and it just does the job. Good sound, lot's of ring and I can get it to sustain forever by positioning it close to my amp. I know that has alot to do with the pickups but it's real controlable. When we play "Dead or Alive" I can get it to hold a D note as long as I want.

Agree, and agree on the pick up sound manipulation. I got actives on, the amp makes a difference too. I got the sound I want out of it now (my '99), sounds almost like my '87. Close, but the Power Jazz Bass Special has a P/J set up.

Thanks! I like it too. Nay, I love it! When trying the last two Jazz Basses I wanted before buying this one, I was between this one and a dark red one, with tinted fretboard. I wanted this one more and, for me at least, it actually sounded clearer. The other was noisier (and in not a good way). So I got it how I wanted it to look and sound.

My bass teacher tested it and he thought it was pretty good, good enough for gigging. That's enough for me (that's coming from a bassist playing for +30 years and who has an American '86, I think, worn Jazz Bass, played and tested a lot).

I think you'll find your jazz will fit the bill for about anything you want or need to use it for. Some give the MIM Fenders a bad rap. It's a Fender and they play great. Once again, yours is incredible. The maple fretboard tops it off. :)

For sure! I have heard it in a few different amps and it sounds great in all. I have faith in it. And as you said, it's a Fender and (while some say it's more a brand than quality) the name has its history and recognition for a reason.

Before deciding to get a Fender I was about to buy a $300 something Squier Jazz Bass (and other two options in the same price range), not too shabby. But I had quite a bit saved, plus I was fortunate enough to get some extra cash in, then I said to myself "What the heck. If I want a sturdy, reliable bass to play for years onwards, and if I'm really serious about improving as a bassist, then I should get myself a great bass to start with." So I went for the next best thing. And I do not regret that decision at all, nor the extra money I had to invest. It's after all that, an investment.

Oh yeah, the maple fretboard looks amazing! I had another option with a tinted fretboard. And I kinda like them, but nothing beats a natural wood colour in my opinion!

The fretboard/neck is actually tinted on your guitar . It's not tinted darker like the option you are talking about but it does have a slight tint. If you look at some of the Squires with the real white necks-- those aren't tinted. Not splitting hairs but tinted necks are mentioned alot in the thread. I like your bass. A friend of mine is getting one just like it. What kind of strings are you putting on it and why aren't they Rotosounds??
