I've been trying to find the year a jazz bass i bought (second hand) and it's not easy,i took of the neck but i didn't find any serial number on the back but only a green stamp and the initial "J.TORRES".

On the top of the neck here's the numbers:

PAT.2,573,254 2,960,900 2,968,204 3,143,028

Is that normal there's no serial number on the back of the neck,is it original or a copy?

Thanks guys for your help,

best,

steve

HI Steve.
J. Torres seems to be a 70's Fender worker. I´ve found out him in two forums
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/j-torres-basses-195685/
http://www.fendermania.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=17&t=000154 -Spanish.
If you need translation I´ll provide you.
Miguel

Hi Steve,

You say you removed the neck and looked at the back of it. Did you look at the butt end of it? That's where the serial number, or at least the code which will help decypher the year of manfacture, will be.

Is there not a serial number on the neck plate? That is where the serial might be.
Fender initially put serials on the bridge in the early 50's, then moved it to the neckplate until ultimately moving it to the headstock.

If there is no serial on the neckplate it is also possible that someone swapped necks before you got it so you have a neck from an earlier year on a body from a later year and they put the body's original neckplate back on.

Hello Steve.
My grandfather has the EXACT same model of bass, and his was made in 1942-1943. All of the numbers are exactly the same.
Hope that helped

Hi

Welcome to my No Serial Number Fender Jazz Bass (NSNFJB) club!

Here is my case

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=53391

I have not yet removed the neck (just feeling, perhaps without any reason, that the screw holes might get bigger and not tight any more).

I hear ya' Zod. Ok I'll do it. I am very sorry, but it is definitely NOT a 1942-1943 model. Fender wasn't making any instruments then. The first Fender fretted solid body bass was the Precision first marketed in 1951 styled upon the general design of the Telecaster 6-string guitar. In 1957 the Precision was redesigned in the concept of being a sister instrument to the Stratocaster 6-string instead of the Telecaster 6-string.

What we know as the Jazz Bass today was marketed first as the DELUXE in 1960/61 model year styled as a companion instrument to the Jazzmaster Guitar which was also called the DELUXE that year. These basses had stacked volume tone controls. The 1961/62 model year the simplified 3 control electronics debuted as did the Jazz Bass model name and the 3 pot control circuit remains the standard today for a passive Jazz.

WOW! I had a 1983 J Bass I got in 1984 for $350. It was my first real bass, and it has J. Torres stamped on the neck. Best of all I am a Torres (not related...as far as I know). So cool to find info on him.
