Me and a few friends are trying to start a band but can't find a bassist. I've been playing guitar for a year am pretty decent. I was curious if I could use the experience from there to adapt to the bass guitar fairly easily in a month or so. I've played my friend's bass but we play with opposite hands so I couldn't get a feel for it. Should I go ahead and try to learn bass? Would my guitar skills help me enough to play in a band in a month or so?

Knowing the guitar would definitely help you get around the bass. I've recently got into bass after playing guitar for a year and a half. I was able to get around it pretty well when I tried some in the store. Even playing upright basses came pretty easy to me.

I'm in you're same situation. I have two friends my age (13), one who sings, and one who plays guitar. To start a band we'd need a drummer and bassist but can't find one. That's one of the reasons I want to get a bass soon.

My suggestion would be to go to Guitar Center or some other music store, try a few basses, and see how you do.

Hope this helped.

The only problem with a guitarist playing bass is that the finger strength has to be much stronger, and the feel of the frets are different to.. I am a bass player myself, and i have seen many guitarists start play bass, and they have å big challenge in front of them self, but apparently a guitarist can start playing the bass, but he has a little challenge in the beginning, but if you want to start playing bass and that is what you have to do to keep up the band, I thing you should do it. But still don't stop playing the guitar.. because then you can loose alot of the theory and stuff..

One tip: Learn the scales. They are very important for you to be a good musician.

I was in that boat once--my buddies needed a bass player, and I was available... I borrowed a cheap setup and fell in love! I traded my Les Paul and Marshall for a 5-string Jazz Bass and a GK. I've never looked back!

You may find that you prefer one instrument over the other, but if you do stick with the bass you'll discover what it's like to be the backbone of a band. And do stick with guitar; I find it easier to learn theory there (scales, modes, chord structures, etc.) and then apply that knowledge to bass.

Keep rockin'

Kyle
