Next week I'll buy a Fender for the first time and I don't know which of them.
A Highway J bass or a Mexican Deluxe Power J bass?
I play rock, metal & blues.
Any idea?

Either one should do you right with the music you play. For the money, HWY 1, can't beat an MIA for under $800 b4 negotiations tho. :)

Well, the only way to really know the answer to that question is to play them in the shop.

Although, to be honest, I think you should really consider saving up some more money and going with a Fender American Jazz Bass. That thing will last you a lifetime (literally).

Let me correct my self as far as under $800, there has been a price hike for '08, so for under $850, you can't beat it, MIA and all.

I would look at the Deluxe Active Jazz (MIM). With the 3-band eq on-board, it is much more versatile then the other basses you mentioned. I much more prefer active jazz basses. I have a Deluxe Active jazz as well as an American Deluxe Jazz FMT. Love them both.

Also look at the Jazz 24. There are allot of great features in that bass for the money.

I have been playing for over 30 years and have used fender basses exclusively the entire time. I currently use a 1999 active custom deluxe Jazz (American) for studio and stage. It serves it's purpose real well in both areas. I highly recommend it, or it's modern equal.
