My Geddy Lee bass ( this is my second) seems a little different than my first- which was a 2004 # QO 95334 ( at least that's all I came up with). As far as I can remember the 04 had a plain neckplate and the Geddy signature on the back of the headstock was smaller than the one I have now.
The Geddy I have now has a "limited edition" neckplate and a somewhat different looking Geddy signature . The thing I'm having trouble finding out is what year # B009173 is from. I have searched serial #'s for Japan. I am aware that Japan serial #'s are hard to date. The only reference to a "B" serial number is late eighties and the Geddy wasn't mfg'd untill 98.
Does anyone know particulars about Geddy Lee basses like what year small changes are made or :::: what is a first year Geddy serial number? In the number "B009173" could the "0" after the "B" be the letter "O" and not a zero?
Due to the condition of the bass I'm leaning towards maybe 99- 02 BUT then again I'm not sure so -- maybe someone knows more about the Geddy's.
Thanks for the help. SV

Looks to be 1998-1999.
Wasn't the GL bass first introduced in 1998.

Yes the 98 was the first year. I have no idea why it has a "B" serial #. It's hard to tell . I guess I'll have to do more research. Maybe I have the Holy Grail 1st Geddy. Doubt it. It's hard to imagine why someone would fake a Geddy. I'm leaning toward it being a first or second year issue.
It has a Limited Edition neckplate. The signature (if I remember right) is bigger or just a little different than my 2004.
I wish someone with a Geddy could post pics of the back of the headstock on theirs -- and the neck plate. Oh and maybe their serial # so I can see if mine is printed the same. I really need to put some pics on here!
My Ged has large pots- and when I removed the Badass there were no indentations from a regular style bridge. It looks like it only had the Badass mounted on it.

btw I wasn't saying yours is fake, more like a question out loud, Zod got some answers for you it seems....post pix of yours. Do you like the sound volume of your bass? There is a thread on here about how the Geddy has a low volume output.

The "B" as it turns out is listed as 98-99 so I like that. It has the LE neckplate and I'm hoping that makes it a first year-- it has a couple zeros after the B so that to me usually means early.

Yes the pickups were very weak upon first playing which is why I installed Dimarzio's in it along with removing the badass and putting a standard P bridge on it. Much better volume, ring, and tone. I cranked it thru my basement amp which is an Ampeg 350 , a Hartke 410 with horn and a Cerwin Vega 115 cab. In the basement it honks. I take it to the gig this Friday to put it thru the big test.

The best way for me to tell if I want to keep a bass is to take it to a gig and see what it does. I listen for a loud "G" string . I turn down the treble a bit and lay into it and see if it has the growl. I play stacatto notes on "E", "B", and "C" and see how it punches thru. If it sounds good on that stuff it's usually a keeper. My gig amp is a GK 800RB and an AMPEG HLF 410. That's all I need. The PA does most of the work. We do loud heavy Rock.

I always hear people talking about "dead spots" on basses. I think that has more to do with 6 string guitars. My Fender basses have no dead spots. I can't recall one that ever had a dead spot. Maybe "dead spot" comes from some odd problem that I haven't experianced. I pretty much set up all my basses close to the same as I can get them.

I never had a bass with dead spots either in the 30 some basses I've had. Lucky maybe, or just not sure what the dead spot is :)

It sounds good w/o the BadAssII bridge? Wouldn't it better to just buy an MIM then? Or you just wanted a CIJ?

I had a bass on craigslist for sale or trade and the trade ended up being the Geddy Lee bass. I thought it was a good trade.

I've come close on dating my Geddy----98 or 99. I think I'd like to find out if the first year Geddy's had a Limited Edition neck plate. I think I may star a new thread.

I have a "Geddy Lee" bass and the serial # is s/n B009102 , neckplate "limited edition" and "crafted in Japan". I bought it new in 2002.

Stroker Vance, do you have more information on the year it's been made?

Regards,

TonH

I found this website on the internet saying it should be from 1998-1999:

Sorry I don't have any info other than the posts above. I sold my 2nd Jedi back in the spring or late winter I think. I made some cash on it. Geddy's are real popular up here. I wish I had more.

If I read correctly your neckplate said "limited edition" right ? I can remember an interview with Geddy Lee about how he could'nt believe "popular his bass was" and how it was only contracted to be a short 1 yr run of his sig bass that had now turned into an artist series that will remain until..?(I also had one of the first year production model)
The Sting bass too had the same basic agenda which also changed from a "Limited Edition" production run to a Artist series production run(Limited edition is a specified short run,Artist is not predetermined run time).ENJOY you got an early model!

Sorry i thought this was a dating thread!
Only a Rush fan would actually take his bass on a date.

Cheers

Looking at the title I'd say dinner and a movie.
